Put yourself in others’ shoes.”

Thank you and I love you!”

A Time for Gratitude: Embracing Family and Reflection During the Autumn Festivals
Where There Is Kindness, There Is Goodness—Where There Is Gratitude, There Is Grace
As the air turns crisp and leaves begin to fall, we welcome the unique convergence of two significant occasions: the 76th National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival—a time traditionally associated with reunion and reflection. This extended break offers not only a respite from academic pursuits but also a valuable opportunity to return home and engage in the deeply meaningful practice of gratitude.
In a recent assembly held for the senior school, the National Headmaster—affectionately referred to as “Mama Headmistress”—led a thoughtful dialogue with students on the significance of the approaching holidays. Opening with the theme “Looking Forward to the Break,” she guided students to reflect on what these festivals truly represent and how family reunions might be transformed into moments of genuine warmth and lasting memory.
She shared two short stories—one in English, one in Chinese—each touching upon a common yet seldom-discussed phenomenon: how festive gatherings, intended to be joyous, can sometimes end in tension or abrupt farewells. The National Headmaster emphasised that whether parents, grandparents, or guardians, it is these individuals who provide steadfast support through challenges and successes alike. “Success stems from gratitude, not isolated achievement”— An educator Yan Tingli.
“Many of us may recognise this experience,” the National Headmaster observed, “that holidays, though meant to be filled with laughter, can sometimes give way to moments of friction. If this has been your experience, please know you are not alone.”

She went on to explain that this is in fact a common social dynamic: the more time spent together, the greater the possibility of disagreement. This may stem from heightened expectations around the holidays, or simply the natural outcome of prolonged close contact. To help navigate these situations, she offered several recommendations:
· In English: “Put yourself in others’ shoes.”
· In Chinese: “把自己放到对方的椅子上”—that is, to “see things through another’s eyes.”
She encouraged students first to cultivate empathy—to strive to understand a family member’s perspective. Second, she stressed the importance of open and kind communication. Finally, she invited students to contribute their own suggestions. One student added: treasure the small moments—share a story from school, or simply say “Thank you.”

Gratitude: The Deeper Purpose of Education
While the pursuit of academic excellence remains central, we must not overlook the role of emotional education. Gratitude, she explained, has the power to broaden minds and inspire more creative and inclusive thinking.
Research indicates that those who regularly express thanks tend to score more highly on measures of life satisfaction. They are less prone to envy, better equipped to handle stress, and often more well-regarded by their peers.
The National Headmaster further prompted students to consider that “the higher aim of education is to integrate gratitude and mutual respect into the fabric of daily life and learning.” To conclude this portion of the assembly, she led the whole school in a heartfelt, unified chorus of “I love you,” filling the hall with an atmosphere of warmth and shared respect.
As the assembly drew to a close, the National Headmaster left students with these final thoughts: “Let us use this holiday to express appreciation, and to turn potential moments of conflict into opportunities for deeper connection. We look forward to hearing your stories of meaningful time spent with family upon your return. Thank you and I love you!”
The room responded with sincere applause, and in the eyes of the students shone both reflection and emotion.

In Summary
The assembly not only encouraged students to reconsider the meaning behind seasonal celebrations, but also inspired a renewed appreciation for family relationships. Through her wisdom and warmth, the National Headmaster has planted in every heart a seed of gratitude and understanding.
We wish all students and staff a joyful and rejuvenating holiday filled with laughter and love among family and friends. May this double festival bring you peace, happiness, and many cherished moments.
