St Andrew’s Day 2020 MIS Ceilidh

Scottish heritage and traditions.

A Ceilidh is a traditional Scottish social ball, originating from Ireland and Scotland. People gather at a Ceilidh to enjoy traditional music and dancing. This year on 27 November is Scotland's ‘National Day’ and we will celebrate our Scottish roots and heritage with our annual St Andrew's Day Scottish Ceilidh.

Donald Mackenzie in 1917 wrote about Ceilidhs:

"On long, dark winter nights it is still the custom in small villages for friends to collect in a house and hold what they call a Ceilidh. Young and old are entertained by the reciters of old poems and legendary stories which deal with ancient beliefs, the doings of traditional heroes and heroines, and so on. Some sing old and new songs set to old music or new music composed in the manner of the old."

MIS’s first Ceilidh last year holds great memories for our MIS community:

Ceilidh Ideas

It is likely that you have never attended a Ceilidh. What actually is a Ceilidh? What do you do at a Ceilidh? What do you wear?

Dress Attire   Traditionally kilts and tartan dresses are worn. Here at MIS you may choose to wear something tartan or formal wear.

Dancing    If you've never been to a Ceilidh before the important thing is that the dances are for everyone to enjoy and join in. Whether you're an expert or a novice, you can have two left feet, or even three - just enjoy! Our MIS staff will be there to guide you, trust us you can learn the moves!

Grand Final   Ceilidhs always ends with the traditional song ‘Auld Lang Syne’, you might want to practice before you come.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

And days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For days of auld lang syne

We twa hae run about the braes

And pu'd the gowans fine

But we've wander'd mony a weary fit

Sin days of auld lang syne

We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn

Frae morning sun till dine

But seas between us braid hae roar'd

Sin days of auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For days of auld lang syne

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp

And surely I'll be mine

And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere

And gie's a hand o' thine

And we'll tak a right gude-willy waught

For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne

Donald Mackenzie
