Alex and Noah

Anna

Clementine

Hanyang

Ruby

Louis

Eva

CCA(增益课程)—小学记者

GCSE(10-11年级)

A-level(12-13

Message from Head of School

Dear MIS family,

I would like to thank all parents of the MIS community for your understanding and support for the school’s work!

Since the beginning of this term, all MIS staff and students have shown solidarity, mutual help and encouragement when challenging times come. These spirits have deeply touched me again and again, and continuously encouraged me and the MIS management team to do our best to deliver normal teaching and minimize the impact of the epidemic on our children’s learning and life. Especially this week, the school has launched the online and offline hybrid teaching, during which the Seniors students have maintained a good state of study, while the Juniors students who stay at school have had a wonderful week under the good care of their house parents and tutors.

The first round of MISPA election in this academic year has ended, and the newly elected members will make their debut next week. I hope that this year’s MISPA and newly elected members will bring more vitality into the home-school communication. The MIS management team is always happy to listen to the voices from our parents and students, and hopes to join hands with all of you to build a lifelong learning community of mutual support and friendliness at MIS.

I hope you can enjoy the wonderful learning and life at MIS through this week’s MISsive.

Wish you a lovely weekend!

Juniors Assembly

Unfortunately, we were unable to have our weekly Juniors assembly this week. However, we would still like to celebrate and recognise the students who have demonstrated our MIS values, during this online learning period. Our new MIS value for the month of November is 'Resilient' and the weekly focus word (virtue) is 'Patience'.A resilient learner will always try their best and will not give up even if they are faced with a challenge. When we practise patience, it is easier for us to keep on trying our best and be resilient. Can you think of any other ways to show resilience?

We would like to congratulate the following students for demonstrating patience and resilience this week:

EY - Alex and Noah

Y1 - Anna

Y2 - Clementine

Y3 - Hanyang

Y4 - Ruby

Y5 - Louis

Y6 - Eva

Pringle - Cici L

I'd also like to recognise the resilience and patience that the Juniors staff have shown this week. The teaching staff have shown resilience and commitment to delivering high quality online lessons, whilst being in lockdown. Equally, the Pringle resident staff and our TAs have demonstrated this in their commitment to supporting the online learning programme and looking after our Pringle students at school. I am extremely thankful for our Juniors team!

Enjoy the photos of some of the fantastic online learning that is taking place this week.

Kind regards,Ms. NeilHead of Juniors

CCA – Junior Reporters

I would like to share with all parents and students the first addition of the Junior Reporters newspaper. Students in Junior reporters CCA in Years 3 and Years 4 have been writing questions to ask new members of staff and students about their experiences of MIS. The student reporters have then interviewed their chosen staff or students with microphones and iPads to record their answers. Students have then written their interviews up as a newspaper report.

The next newspaper will be published in the next few weeks. Students have been reporting on the Halloween party, Juniors tug of war, sports events within the school and student council.

Miss Chalmers, Junior Reporters CCA teacher.

On Oct 27, 2022, MIS student Max (Y12) won a Gold prize in this year’s UKMT-SMC, a math competition sponsored by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, which paved the way for him to participate in British Mathematics Olympiad (BMO), an even more prestigious and challenging mathematics contest. During an interview in SSC, Max said that he loves mathematics and science and has received a lot of help from MIS’ Maths and Science teachers. He mentioned that Mr. Dong Fei, Ms. Marion Muetzefeldt (MIS Head of Sschool), and Mr. Copley provided a lot of support during his mathematics study. He particularly appreciated the fact that the teachers answered many of his questions when he is working on Further Pure Maths one year ahead of time.

Max said that he would like to study Maths or science in college in the future. He has not made up his mind about a particular subject of study, but he is thinking of pure mathematics, quantum physics, astrophysics, and chemical engineering as the most favourable fields of study. He is currently doing a lot of reading in astrophysics and getting a lot of help from Mr. Harbinson, who studied the same subject as his university major.

Max said that he is interested in participating in more maths and science competitions in the future. However, he would make a reasonable plan for competitions and he would consider other options to enhance his learning as well as to strengthen his college application. Max is seriously interested in doing an EPQ, as recommended by SSC, to gain some research experience and to finish a 5000-words investigation report on a scientific topic. SSC has promised to connecting Max to a research laboratory on astrophysics so that Max can collect data for his EPQ. We wish Max can achieve even greater success in the coming years.

Seniors Art

GCSE & A-level Art & Design students have been doing their Mock exams this week. Students spend 10-15 hours to finish their final pieces. They are working hard to produce the best work.

GCSE (Y10-11)

Art & Design is made up of two parts which will be added together to produce a final grade.

There are four assessment objectives in GCSE. Students need to show their ability in 4 areas.

A-level (Y12-13)

A-level Art & Design program is also made up of two parts. Different from GCSE art program, A-level requires the personal study (essay writing) in Part 1 of the exam which aims to guide and assist students in doing the art exploration.

Seniors Maths Classroom --- what should the students be doing?

1.Actively engaged in doing mathematics.

students should be metaphorically rolling up their sleeves and “doing mathematics” themselves, not watching others do maths for them or in front of them.

2. Solving challenging problems.

students should be investigating meaningful real-world problems whenever possible. Mathematics is not a stagnant field of textbook problems; it is a dynamic way of constructing meaning about the world around us, generating new knowledge and understanding about real world every day.

Maths is not a field that exists in isolation. It is essential that students have the opportunity to discuss mathematics with one another, refining and critiquing each other’s ideas and understandings. Communication can occur through paired work, small group work, or class presentations.

Y12 Parent Evening

Parents evening is such a fundamental part of school: so we have been so happy to be able to invite parents back to the campus to hold the parent meetings face-to-face, the way it should be. Year 12 is always a big change for students so it was particularly heartening to be able to discuss with parents the many successful starts experienced by our students so-far this term.

Clan Junior Tug of War

Last Friday, the Juniors participated in their first big Clan event of the academic year, the Tug of War. All the pupils came into school wearing their clan tops and sat with their clans during the event. The event was spectacular, and it was great to see the pupils (and the staff!) get into the spirit of things. On that note, congratulations to Clan Edinburgh for their victory. The results are as follows:

  1. Edinburgh

  2. Lomond

  3. Nevis

  4. Balmoral

Catch up with Senior Clan!

Our second event of the year was extremely competitive, and it was a great test of strength, teamwork and communication.

On Wednesday 26th October, our students gathered in the atrium and sat in their Clans, waiting for the first games to begin. There was a bright sea of purple, blue, green and orange! This competition saw our students compete in mixed gender teams amongst year groups. Our brave year 7’s were up first and set the stage for the rest of the competition.

Games were very close, and it was amazing to see students step out of their comfort zones! When it got to the old year groups, a clear dominance was shown by Clan Nevis, and they were victorious in this competition!

With two games going on at a time, it was crazy, colourful and chaotic! A special mention to how wonderful and responsible our new Clan captains were! They were motivating their peers, organising teams and were also running to collect the balls – Good job Clan captains!

Staff in the Spotlight

This week we are delighted to introduce you about our PE teacher and he is also one of Y7 Form Tutors Mr Michael Alberts. Let’s find more about him!

Where else in the world have you lived?

China is the first and only country I have lived in besides my home country, South Africa.

How do you find China is different from those where you have lived?

China overall is full of culture. I come from a country which is diverse with cultures and to experience a Chinese culture is educational. China is a lot bigger than South Africa in population. I come from a small city in South Africa so having to move to a big, populated city is an enormous difference for me. It allows for more opportunities.

What’s your favourite weekend activity in Shenzhen?

I have a variety of favorite weekend activities. My first choice would be playing rugby on the weekend when we have fixtured games. If there were no games scheduled, you would find me on the beach or in the sea either surfing or swimming. I will always be outdoors hiking, surfing, or enjoying Chinese culture.

Did you always want to be a teacher?

Teaching has always been a passion of mine since educators have a significant impact in the development of future people of our society. I understood this from having experienced a teacher to develop myself into the person I am today.

Tell us about a hidden talent or a top secret that no-one would know about you.

I am not sure I have a hidden talent or If I do, I have not yet found it. I am, however, a talented athlete. I enjoy cooking so I would like to think I am a good chef. I do enjoy trying something new all the time so maybe one day, I will find my hidden talent.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party, dead or alive?

This is really a challenging question as I would either invite more than five or forget someone that should have been on my list. The five people that come to head straight away would be: Dan Carter as he has been my childhood hero for rugby. Leonardo DiCaprio is my favorite actor. Bob Marley as musician and icon. Albert Einstein for his mind. And Kevin Hart as the comedian to keep the dinner part entertained.

What does a typical day at MIS look like for you?

A typical day in MIS starts with a cup of coffee. It is my kick start to the early morning preparations I need to do. When I arrive at MIS, I will have 20 minutes to meet my colleagues and discuss the day's plan. I attend my form class where we have certain activities in place for different days of the week. It is then followed by the beginning of period 1 to 6 with a lunch break. I will start my ISL training or attend meetings where I need to be. I will finish my day at MIS with some feedback or discussion with fellow colleagues before heading home.

Do you have a motto or saying that really resonates with you?

Yes, my motto is “Mind over Matter.”  It resonates with past challenges I have overcome and future challenges I may experience.

Do you have a most memorable teacher moment?

I have several memorable teaching moments, but one that stands the most would be a student I taught and helped achieve his potential from coming from one of the worst economic and social backgrounds in South Africa to a successful businessperson with pure dedication and perseverance to make his life better for himself and his family. It was an inspiration to me as a teacher and others around him.

Hope you enjoy reading our MISsive and see you next time on Friday 18 November, 2022.
