Last year, Dr Murray Tod, our new Head wrote a letter to MIS community through our Deputy Chair Mr Hunter: “I am absolutely delighted, and very proud, to have been appointed as the next Head of Merchiston International School…I look forward to meeting with the whole school community, both collectively and individually, and thank you in advance for all your commitment and loyalty.”

Due to the epidemic, Dr Tod was unable to join MIS earlier and MIS is running well under Mr Hunter’s leadership.

At the end of Term 2, we received great news!  Dr Tod’s paperwork to come to China has been approved! With his flight tickets booked, we can confirm that Dr Tod will arrive in China on 10 April . After the mandatory quarantine Dr Tod is ready to get to MIS and get “stuck in”.

We are delighted to introduce Dr Murray Tod.

Murray is originally from Scotland and attended Daniel Stewart‘s and Melville College in Edinburgh. From there he went to Glasgow University where he gained his MA and PhD in History. While Murray’s father taught at Stewart’s Melville and Strathallan School, his mother’s final years as a teacher were at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh.

Murray is an experienced teacher, he has many years under his belt teaching History and Politics to different age levels. Although he started teaching at university level, at both Edinburgh & Glasgow Universities, he soon branched out to teach A Levels, AS, Scottish Highers and GCSE courses at Rannoch School, Glenalmond College, both in Scotland, and Epsom College, Surrey. EAch of the mentioned schools are boarding schools and Murray understands fully the way of life within boarding for students and staff, and the commitment involved. In addition to being a boarding Housemaster at Epsom College, Surrey, Murray has been a Head of Department (History & Politics) and, initially through his role as an Assistant Head, he has experience of leading on the strategic direction of the curriculum and academic development matters.

Behind the scenes there is a lot of work involved in the daily running of international schools.  In his position as Deputy Head at Epsom College, Malaysia, he was responsible for Admissions and all teaching staff operations. This give Murray an excellent understanding of leadership in these important areas of a school where clear communication and a good working relationship with staff, parents and students is crucial. His elevation to the role of Second Master at Epsom College, prior to the Headship, saw him take on the responsibility for the operational day-to-day leadership of the school.

Murray Is married to Kirsty, who was a Housemistress at Epsom College UK for 10 years and latterly held the post of Senior Housemistress. She has also been involved at Epsom College, Malaysia, as the Director of Boarding Compliance, involved in all policy documentation and accreditation matters. Murray and Kirsty have one daughter, Isla, who is 10 years old. With his Edinburgh connections, Murray was attracted to the role by the opportunity to continue the development in Shenzhen of Merchiston International School with MIS, sitting proudly alongside the mother Scottish school, Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh.

Personal Interests

Dr Tod is interested in all facets of politics and he remains a keen historian. He enjoys a wide variety of activities including playing squash and watching rugby.

As we look forward to Dr Tod’s imminent arrival we are delighted that Mr Hunter, our Deputy Chair to the Board of Governors will continue to serve MIS.  Mr Hunter as you will know has spent over 20 years at MCS and has been with MIS since the very beginning, we look forward to spending more time with Mr & Mrs Hunter as MIS continues to grow.

受疫情影响，Tod博士未能提早加入曼校，曼校在Hunter先生的领导下运转良好，静候Tod博士的到来。

在第二学期结束的时候，我们终于收到了好消息！Tod博士来中国的签证审批通过了！前往深圳的机票也已定好，我们可以确认，Tod博士将于4月10日到达中国。在解除隔离后，新校长将和曼校社区成员见面，投入到曼校的日常工作中。

Tod博士已婚，太太Kirsty曾在英国爱普森学院（Epsom College）担任女舍监长达10年，而后被晋升为资深女舍监。她也跟随先生调往马来西亚校区担任寄宿合规部总监，参与寄宿团队政策文件和认证文书的编写。校长夫妇育有一女Isla，目前10岁。因为他与爱丁堡母校的不解之缘，他对深圳曼校校长这一岗位十分中意，希望能够带领深圳曼彻斯通城堡学校继续发展壮大，成为苏格兰爱丁堡曼彻斯通城堡学校知名的海外分校。
