Head of School
Nationality: British
Murray Tod was educated at Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh, before attending the University of Glasgow to study an MA in History, Politics and Philosophy, and later a PhD in Scottish Medieval History. He started his teaching career in the mid 1990s at Edinburgh and Glasgow universities, before securing teaching posts at Glenalmond College and Rannoch School in the UK. In 2002 Dr Tod moved to Epsom College UK and over the course of the next 15 years he assumed various roles of responsibility, including boys’ Boarding Housemaster, Acting girls’ Housemaster, Head of Department (History & Politics), and lastly Assistant Headmaster. He moved to Epsom College in Malaysia in December 2016, as Second Master and then Headmaster, before arriving at MIS as Head of School in April 2021. A committed boarding schoolmaster, Dr Tod is proud of his twenty years of experience in boarding schools and is proud to uphold the distinct values of a Merchiston education. He is married to Kirsty and they have one daughter (Isla). Further to his educational interests, Dr Tod is fascinated by all strands of global Politics and, whilst no longer able to compete, he is a passionate rugby union and squash enthusiast.

Sabrina joined MIS in August 2018 and is the Academic Deputy Head in Juniors. She is responsible for the teaching and learning of the Juniors curriculum. Sabrina previously served as the Assistant Head Teacher at Churchfield Primary School in England. She studied for her degree in Primary Education at the University of Brighton and is currently completing the COBIS (Council of British International Schools) Aspiring Heads professional qualification. A committed sportsperson, Sabrina has played netball to a high standard in the UK and enjoys bringing her experience of the sport to the MIS extra-curricular programme.

Daniel completed his first degree and PGCE courses in Mathematics at Birmingham University, with further research in the Teaching and Learning of Algebra. His UK career involved promotion to a series of leadership roles, included an Assistant Headship at Southfield Technology College and Workington Sixth Form College. Daniel taught Mathematics at Kellett School in Hong Kong, prior to which he was Assistant Head teacher responsible for Data and Organisation at Dulwich College, Beijing, where he was also lead teacher for Higher Mathematics. Daniel is an active member of Mensa and enjoys sharing the many resources that this provides with his students. Daniel can therefore offer a wide range of challenging extra-curricular activities, including Logic & Spatial Reasoning, Cosmology and Higher Order Problem Solving. Daniel enjoys taking his family anywhere in the world where life is simple and the trappings of modern society are not close to hand. His own interests include cosmology, culture, travel, geology and cricket. Daniel is married to Gabriella, a piano teacher and they have five sons, Dominic, Patrick, Xavier, Hektor and Ryker.

Born in Wales, she went to Brecon Girls Grammar School and then to Royal Holloway College, University of London, where she studied Mathematics. After graduating, she worked in the Nuffield Institute for Medical Research in Oxford, where she met her husband, Robert. They moved to Edinburgh, where Robert completed his PhD and Marion taught Maths in Lansdowne House School (now part of St George's School for Girls, Merchiston's sister school). She also taught at Napier University and the American School in Edinburgh. She then went to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh to teach Maths, and stayed for almost 40 years, becoming Head of Mathematics and finally Deputy Head Academic. Her time at Merchiston was very happy, and she loved her job. Her work has always been her passion, but she also enjoys cycling, jogging, and keeping up with friends and family. She has three children, a daughter who went to St George's, and two boys who went to Merchiston.

Barbara was Born in Uganda and brought up in Africa, living in Uganda, Botswana and Swaziland. She travelled backwards and forwards to the UK to attend a UK Boarding school from the age of 13 then attended the University of Exeter where she took her Bachelor of Education Degree from in Art and Design. Barbara met Andrew on their first day as 18-year-old freshers at Exeter University, and Andrew rather charmingly says “This was the best day of my life!”. Barbara has experience of teaching Art, History of Art and Textiles in five very different schools: two state schools and three independent schools, including Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh. Between 1998 and 2018, Barbara helped Andrew lead Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh. Her work involved: being part of the marketing and admissions team; being responsible for the overall presentation of the school; travelling and promoting MCS, Edinburgh across the globe; welcoming prospective parents to MCS and running dinners and events for parents. She also taught Art, History of Art and Textiles in the Art and Design Department. Barbara and Andrew have three adult children and she enjoys walking in the countryside; swimming; reading; theatre; cinema; watching live music; travel and learning about and embracing new cultures and international cuisine, in addition to being with her family.

Ms Wei graduated from the Chinese Department of Jilin University. She taught at several famous schools in Jilin and Shenzhen, including Changchun No.2 Experimental Primary School, Northeast Normal University Affiliated Primary School, Yucai No. 1 Primary School and Shenzhen Experimental School in Nanshan for over 36 years. With rich experience in education management and Chinese teaching she has won many prizes in provincial and municipal teaching competitions. She participated in the compilation of 12 books such as "Primary School Morality Education Story Series", "Research on Primary School Chinese Teaching Reform", "100 examples of Primary School Chinese Teaching activities ", "Primary School Chinese Writing" textbook (Y1-Y6), etc. She is also the chief editor of the collection of words written by children, the first Young Leaf. The team she led and guided also won many awards such as the National Advanced School for Morality Education. She has been awarded honorable titles like the Excellent Young Pioneers Counselor in Changchun, she is also Golden Award Winner of Shenzhen Experimental School and Excellent Homeroom Teacher of Shenzhen and many other awards.
Senior Chinese Consultant

Ms Guo Yan, Chinese Teacher, has been working as an educator for 36 years. She believes that education creates an unlimited development space for every child and received the “Excellent Teacher” award by Henan province in 1995. Coming to Shenzhen in 2009 she began a leadership role in Shenzhen Experimental School and worked as the Director of the Chinese teaching department. With her support the Chinese teachers carried out the curriculum reform experiment and the team was awarded as “Primary School Chinese Demonstration Teaching and Research Group" by Shenzhen Academy of Education. She also won the "excellent team" Award of Experimental Education Group. Her research programme "Children's Subjective Development Experiment" was selected for The National Ninth Five-year Plan Experimental Project. She was awarded the first prize of "Excellent Achievement of the Experimental Project of Basic Education Reform in 1996" by the State Education Commission. Ms Guo’s academic writing "the Application and Controlling of Emotional Strategies in Chinese Teaching" in 1997 won the first prize of Henan Education Society Academic Research. Many of her papers have been published in core publications such as "Popular Psychology", "Primary School Chinese Teaching", "Primary School Teaching" and "Education Times". In 2010, she undertook the compilation of reading materials for primary schools in Shenzhen.

Mr Jianguang is the Director of Community Healthcare Service of Shi’ao community, Longhua district, Shenzhen. He graduated from Jinggangshan University and worked in Yongxin County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jiangxi Province for over 20 years, where he served as Resident, Attending Physician, Deputy Chief Physician and Head of Medical Affairs. From 2005 he worked as the Deputy Chief Physician in Longhua District People's Hospital of Shenzhen and is currently the Director of Shi’ao Community Health Centre. In 2018 he was selected as " Famous physician of Lingnan area" by Guangdong Family Doctors Association.

Kirsty studied Biomedical Research before going on to complete her PGCE in Primary Education at the University of Strathclyde. After working in the UK for four years, Kirsty moved to the British International School, Moscow where she taught Early Years and Year 1. She also taught at the British School of Tashkent for a year. In 2016, Kirsty took a sabbatical and studied for her Masters in Educational Research at the University of Glasgow, where she focused on child development and educational psychology. After completing her Masters, Kirsty moved to Doha as the Head of Early Years at Compass International School, where she gained invaluable leadership experience and a deeper understanding of the importance of play-based learning opportunities for young children. Kirsty offers a range of different extra-curricular activities which reflect her interests in reading, cooking and child development.

Karen completed her BSc in Applied Science at St John's York (Leeds University) and worked in the United Kingdom for nine years, ending with responsibility for Special Educational Needs and Able and Gifted students. Karen decided to work internationally many years ago due to her interest in Modern Languages and worked for the British Government in secondments to European Schools in Frankfurt, Germany and Alicante, Spain. It was here that Karen's passion for working with English as an Additional Language students really took hold. From there, she worked in NLCS South Korea for four years in both Key Stages 1 and 2. Karen spends her spare time doing all things crafty, from sewing to drawing to renovating her home in France.

Gina completed her degree in Education at Rolle College, Exmouth and after graduation worked for a number of years in the Third Sector in the south west of England as a Project Manager. After traveling and teaching overseas in South America and Europe, Gina has taught in international primary schools in Shanghai for the last nine years. She loves spending quality time with her family and friends, cooking, walking, reading and practicing yoga.

Lannee completed her BA in English and TESOL at the University of South Wales. After graduating she went on to teach children in Hong Kong. A year later she decided to train formally as a primary school teacher and completed her PGCE through the University of Warwick, at a school in North London. Lannee has previously taught in Hong Kong, London and Ningbo before moving to join MIS in Shenzhen. Lannee has always wanted to teach internationally due to a passion for experiencing other cultures and enjoys teaching children from a range of different nationalities. She has enjoyed living in China so far and is looking forward to moving to a new city and exploring everything in Shenzhen! Lannee enjoys craft and makes her own clothes, as well as staying active with kickboxing and other martial arts.

Before joining MIS Jackie worked at the British School of Brasilia, where she was Primary Maths Coordinator and Year 3 teacher, and Harrow International School, Beijing. In a varied and extensive career she has taught in Scotland, China, Brazil and Ireland where she was also assistant to the Deputy Director of Dublin’s Gate Theatre. She gained her BA (Hons) at Cumbria College of Art and Design and her PGDE from Moray House School of Education at Edinburgh University. Jackie really wants students to enjoy maths, have fun with numbers and show their deep understanding of mathematical concepts. She offers a strong set of CCAs including Eco Warriors, Science Club, Theatre Production, Cricket and Yoga. Jackie herself enjoys music (she plays the trumpet and sings) as well as yoga, hiking, travelling and learning languages.

Morgan was educated at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. There he gained his BA Degree in Geography. After that he completed his MSc in Environmental Planning at Queens’s University Belfast. As well as this he obtained his Higher Diploma in Arts in Primary School Education from Hibernia College Dublin. Morgan worked as a primary school teacher in Ireland for three years before moving to China. He moved to Shenzhen in 2010 and took up a position teaching English. He has been a teacher during his ten years in Shenzhen and brings a lot of understanding and enthusiasm to the needs of the students in his care. He believes once the student has fun with learning, the ability to take on deeper understanding of the topic becomes second nature. Outside of the classroom Morgan likes spending time with his family. He enjoys football, running and reading and is looking forward to contributing to the experience of students at Merchiston.

Having completed her degree in French and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at the University of Central Lancashire, Debora then took her PGCE at the University of Hull, specialising in Primary Education and Modern Foreign Languages. Debora has extensive experience teaching in international schools in Asia. She has worked in Thailand at Heathfield International School and at Regents International School, as well as in China at Yew Chung International School, Qingdao. Debora’s interests in languages, music, art and photography have a strong influence on her classroom and extra-curricular teaching.

Nicholas completed his undergraduate degree at Swansea University and then obtained his PGCE in Early Years and Mathematics at Bristol University. Nicholas has been teaching for 40 years, spending the last 15 years teaching abroad. He previously taught for seven years in Shenzhen teaching in Shen Wai International School (SWIS) and the International School of Nanshan (ISNS). Nicholas is experienced in Special Needs Education and is passionate about inclusive education. He believes that if teachers and parents work together as a team, it will give the children the best education possible. Nicholas is fascinated by Chinese culture and language and really enjoys working in MIS and in Shenzhen.

After completing a BA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at East Asia Institute of Management in Singapore, Rose worked in the logistics and educational consulting industries. Later she obtained her MA in Teaching Chinese as a foreign language in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Working part-time at a STEM summer camp and educational institutions gave her great teaching experience. She supported teachers from the United States to prepare for lessons with the students to assist them with STEM. Rose is always enthusiastic about the English language and western cultures. She enjoys watching US/UK TV programmes and working on her English verbal skills. Making hand crafts is also a huge passion and she enjoys teaching crafts lessons, which helps students to practice their fine motor skills and enrich their after-school activities.

Vivien graduated from the Nanjing University of Finance and Economics with a bachelor's degree in Economics. She also has a qualification for Teaching in Primary Education. Prior to joining MIS she worked in a professional STEM educational institution. Vivien previously worked as a one-to-one tutor assisting students who were currently at, or applying to, international schools. She understands the psychology of primary school students, is good at stimulating students' interest, guiding students to explore learning and helping students develop their ability to acquire knowledge. Vivien loves history and arts and takes advantage of the weekends to visit museums and art exhibitions enjoying a variety of artworks.

Lavender completed her BA in English at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Zhongshan Institute. She is certified in TEM4 & TEM8 and worked for a year in the Educational Institute as an English teacher in Zhongshan. Lavender decided to work internationally because she really enjoyed speaking English every day and she hopes to contribute by creating an international environment for children. She feels language is the best way to understand cultures and learning about different countries. Lavender likes to share Chinese culture with others. In her free time she enjoys sport, rock climbing and outdoor activities.

Bonnie completed her BA in Preschool Education at the Hunan Normal University. Bonnie’s career in education started from teaching children aged 2-6 delivering tailored one-on-one rehabilitation courses for children with special needs. Later she worked at Ningbo Huamao International School teaching Chinese to boarding children. Bonnie has a passion for education and joined MIS to learn about the International Primary Curriculum. Bonnie believes that a play-based curriculum is extremely important for young children and is thrilled to work with a group of outstanding colleagues who have creative minds and effective execution. Outside of work, Bonnie enjoys spending her down time with her family including outdoor activities, cooking, reading and playing the guitar.

Kiki completed her BA in Business English at the Longqiao College of Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics. She engaged in English teaching in an educational agency for over a year before she joined MIS. Kiki approached an international school because she believes the school has a more complete teaching system. She likes to learn and try different teaching modes to enrich her teaching ideas. She enjoys cultivating students' international-mindedness by learning about the cultures of different countries. Kiki enjoys photographing, X-sports and travelling as well as watching musicals and drama, especially Shakespeare and feels she has learned a lot through drama.

Susan completed her BA in Media and Communication at the Shenzhen University, working for a year as teaching assistant in an English educational agency thereafter. Working in an international school, Susan believes is full of exciting challenges, which helps her to gain more experience. Having learned Japanese for more than two years, she is happy to teach students basic Japanese and Japanese culture during the co-curricular activities time, which enriches students’ international minds. Susan enjoys travelling around the world and learning new languages.

Daisy completed her BA in English Education at Shenzhen University and later went on to study a certificate in English Teaching at the Department of Education for Hope International. Daisy experienced a few months working in education in Japan before deciding that Shenzhen was where she wanted to develop her career. Daisy has previously taught at Agape English Learning Centre as a primary school teacher before working closely with students who study English as a second language. Daisy believes in encouraging children to make progress emotionally and academically. Having worked in China, Japan and Switzerland, Daisy feels she can differentiate cultural differences and motivate children to achieve goals in learning process.
Daisy enjoys reading and actively joins a weekly study salon. She attends historical exhibitions in museums on a regular basis.

Dongwei completed his BA in English in his hometown in China. Later Dongwei further improved his study and teaching experience by obtaining his MSc in TESOL at the University of Edinburgh. He then went on to work for a year in the marketing sector after post-graduation. Dongwei’s passion for English and working with young learners led him to work internationally and in international schools. In his free time Dongwei enjoys listening to English songs as well as singing and dancing in a nice and cozy atmosphere.

Haily completed her bachelor’s degree in the Northwest University of Political Science and Law. Haily chose to study this because she enjoys learning languages and education philosophies. After graduation she started her full-time teaching English to students. Haily decided to work internationally due to her interest in working and learning with children from different nationalities. She received her Teacher’s Certificate and the Certificate of International Chinese Language Teacher. Haily enjoys keeping a kind and active attitude toward students and teaching.

Valerie completed her BA in English (Specialised Linguistics) at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. She is top level certified in TEM-4 & TEM-8 and equipped with a Chinese teacher certification in high-school English. Valerie worked for a year in a leading educational institution and an internship experience in one of the Global 500. Valerie decided to work internationally due to her interest in English learning. She believes that the best way to learn a new language is to emerge in its language and cultural environment. She has faith in education and enjoys watching students make steady progress with her support. Valerie enjoys voluntary activities and travelling in her spare time, visiting Moscow, Russia for a voluntary project for two months.

Nikki has worked for a Chinese leading educational institution and is delighted to join MIA. Nikki chose to work in Merchiston as her interest in helping students and her exploration towards a creative way of educating.During her spare time, Nikki enjoys reading, travel and meditation.

Ryan has always had a love for mathematics that stems from his positive experience of being taught by an inspiring mathematics teacher while at school. This love of mathematics carried him through a mathematics degree and PGCE in his hometown of Sheffield, England. After a brief stint working in a local school in Yorkshire, Ryan had his sights set on adventure and a job in Qatar followed. Ryan and his wife Laura previously worked in the Middle East for 11 years moving from Qatar to Dubai and then Abu Dhabi where he has held numerous roles in both the academic and pastoral areas of the schools, from Mathematics Lead Teacher to Head of Sixth Form. Ryan is a sports lover at heart and although his best footballing days are behind him, the game of golf has firmly taken its place.

Nationality: Romanian
Joy graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest in 2007 and followed a career in banking for seven years in the UK, where she learned valuable lessons in leadership, corporate communication and customer satisfaction. Joy discovered her passion for learning whilst developing new staff and continued with a BSc in Mathematics and a QTS from Edge Hill University in UK. She has taught mathematics in the UK in various schools, across key stages. In 2018, Joy moved with her family to Chengdu and taught mathematics in an international setting. She is currently studying for a Level 3 Counselling diploma, as well as working on her Masters degree in Educational Leadership with the University of Derby.

Natalia graduated from Yaroslavl Pedagogical University with a degree in mathematics, later she obtained her teaching qualification in the UK. Natalia has taught in Russia, the UK, Malaysia, and China. She sees maths as an essential tool for life and work, as vital for developing higher order thinking skills and as an endless source of challenge and pleasure. Natalia always seeks new and creative ways to help students understand mathematics, to enrich the standard curriculum through problem-solving activities. Outside of teaching, Natalia enjoys reading, international travel and is passionate about Asian culture, food and history.

Nationality: German
Dr Eichert studied Biochemistry at the Free University Berlin and was awarded Dr. rer. nat. in 2010. He then undertook postdoctoral research at the Rockefeller University in New York City, accompanied by teaching undergraduate students. After moving to China, Dr Eichert first continued teaching at university level, before moving to secondary education and obtaining his teaching certificate. Having worked in the American Advanced Placement as well as the International Baccalaureate systems at international schools in Ningbo and Guangzhou, he brings a broad experience of the different international education systems to MIS. When not teaching, André enjoys traveling, chess and badminton.
Physics & Maths (Seniors)
Nationality: Brazilian
Maykell completed his Bachelor of Science in Physics at the Federal University of Uberlandia and later went on to study an Master of Education and a Doctor of Education in Science Education both at Sao Paulo State University. Working a few years as an academic researcher on condensed matter physics and physics education, he then went to teach physics and mathematics in public and private schools before becoming an assistant university professor and obtained a Brazilian Teacher Certification in Secondary with a specialism in Physics. Maykell previously taught in Beijing as a Year 11-13 physics and mathematics teacher. Maykell decided to work internationally due to his interest in understanding the differences in methods and approaches in science education across the globe. He has enjoyed working in Brazil, Canada, and China where he has been able to learn more about each of the different cultures and to help students to thrive in various international schools. Maykell enjoys photography, playing musical instruments, studying new languages and travelling.

Adam has a degree in Astrophysics from the University College London and later completed a PGCE in Secondary Science at the University of Sussex. He has been a secondary teacher for 12 years in the UK and China, teaching IBDP and A Level Physics. He has been in China on and off for more than 12 years, having lived in Dalian, Wuxi and now Shenzhen. Adam loves teaching and the infinite challenges that being a teacher brings, but thinks the best thing about being a teacher is getting to learn something new every day.
Biology & Science (Seniors)

Diane completed her BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Wales College Cardiff. She taught English for a year in Italy, confirming her passion for teaching which led to her PGCE in Secondary Science/Biology. Having a love of travelling from a young age and wishing to explore the world, her first posting was in Portugal. She has worked for three years in The Gambia, Africa in Marina International School, teaching biology, chemistry and physics at IGCSE level and A Level Biology. During her 11 years at the British International School of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia she met her husband. Having worked in Switzerland, France, Indonesia and Hong Kong, Diane tries to learn some of the language in each country she lives in. She is confident in French, Italian and Spanish. Diane ran a gymnastics club for two years in Jeddah and enjoys most sports, including tennis, yoga, swimming and badminton. She also likes to read fiction and to cook and eat healthy food.
Bilingual Chemistry (Seniors)

Dr Xu obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) with specialisation in Microbiology and Immunology from the National University of Singapore (NUS) alongside her Bachelor of Biochemistry from the Sun Yat-Sen University. Dr Xu has taught IBDP and IGCSE Biology and Chemistry in international schools in Foshan, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Dr Xu has extensive research background gained in doctoral studies. She is a strong believer in practicing student-centric approach to teaching and learning and embrace constructivism as the foundations of pedagogy in the view of inclusivity and diverseness. Practicing confirmation inquiry, structured, guided and open inquiry-based learning and differentiated learning means her philosophy would be to “Teach less, learn more” (TLLM). Dr Xu served as a competent executive member of the examinations board in a previous school running assessments, regulating standards and protocols to ensure that formative and summative assessments conducted in schools are transparent, fair and of a uniform experience for all.
Lab Technician (Seniors)

Lucky completed her BS in Metal Material Engineering at Materials College of JiangXi University of Science and Technology. After graduating Lucky joined the MIS team as a Lab Technician. She enjoys working in the science department as the lessons at MIS are very hands on and vivid, students learn by experimenting thus are more receptive to new knowledge. Lucky founded a Science Laboratory CCA last year, which helped students explore the magical word of science after class. Lucky enjoys traveling and exploring the natural and cultural scenery of different places.
Lab Technician (Seniors)

Lulu joined MIS in September 2020 as a lab technician. Responsible for the preparation of scientific experiments and the management of lab chemicals and equipment. Lulu completed a master's degree in chemical engineering from China University of Geosciences ,Wuhan, and obtained a high school chemistry teacher qualification certificate during college. Before joining MIS Lulu was responsible for the research and development of advanced chemicals in the R&D department of an internationally renowned Japanese company. She performed laboratory management tasks and obtained the management qualification “Certificate of Hazardous Chemicals” during this time. Lulu thoroughly enjoys participating in scientific experiments which helps students gain scientific knowledge and enables her to be supportive in the classroom.

With an English Literature and History degree and an Education degree from Queen’s University, Olivia enjoyed teaching for three years at an international school in Macau along with a short stint in Spain. As the former English department head at her school, Olivia enjoyed creating opportunities for parent and community engagement through performance and creative writing initiatives at the school. She recently pursued her Master’s degree in Youth Justice full-time at Queen’s University Belfast, and has a particular interest in the advocation of children’s rights, restorative justice, and multiculturalism in education. In her free time, Olivia enjoys sketching and painting, learning new languages, playing music, as well as playing multiple sports, such as martial arts and cross-country running.

Laura qualified with a PGCE in Secondary English from Sheffield Hallam University. In addition to the UK, Laura has taught in Qatar and Dubai and joins Merchiston from Abu Dhabi. Laura has successfully taught English at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 across a range of curricula including IGCSE, A Level and International Baccalaureate. She has also spent time teaching English at a Summer School in Malaysia as well as a Cultural Centre on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. Teaching overseas fueled her passion for travel; working with students from a variety of backgrounds is fascinating to her and she enjoys learning about their cultures and traditions as she teaches and helps to develop her students’ skills in communicating, reading and writing. Laura enjoys spending time travelling and exploring with her husband Ryan and son Harrison who are also members of the MIS family. She is a keen runner and devotes as much time as she can towards developing her yoga practice.

Originally graduating with a degree in Politics from the University of Leicester, Mike’s desire to travel led him to take the Certificate in TESOL from Sheffield Hallam University. Since then, Mike has been teaching English as a second/foreign language and his work has taken him to the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Azerbaijan and Tanzania. Before coming to Shenzhen, Mike lived in Hong Kong for 13 years and he has extensive experience teaching Chinese learners English. Mike completed his PGDE in Secondary English Language Teaching at the University of Hong Kong whilst working full-time at the British Council. After that, Mike worked for six years in local Hong Kong secondary schools as an EDB NET. Mike also has a Certificate in Teaching and Learning the IBMYP from Bethel University. A rugby enthusiast, Mike is both a World Rugby qualified referee and coach. At weekends, Mike enjoys refereeing in Hong Kong.

Tim completed his BSc in Geography and Sport Science at Loughborough University. Upon completion of his undergraduate study, he worked as a Learning Support Assistant in an English Secondary School. During this time Tim worked with a range of students with various educational needs but was particularly interested in working with students that had emigrated to the United Kingdom and were therefore considered second language learners. This initial interest led Tim to seek international jobs that focused on teaching English as an additional language. Eight years ago Tim decided to move to Shenzhen and now refers to himself as a ‘Shenzhener’ and calls the city his home. During this time, he has worked at various schools and educational institutions and completed his IPGCE with The University of Nottingham. Outside of the classroom, Tim enjoys participating in various sports ranging from traditional team games such a basketball and rugby to more adventurous outdoor pursuit such as surfing and hiking. Aside from sport Tim is also a keen photographer specialising in macro photograph which relieves the often overlooked beauty and patterns of the miniature world.

Initially, instead of pursuing an EAL Teaching position, David joined Merseyside Police where he worked as a Police Constable. In a distinguished career, David worked in a variety of roles for fourteen years and served several communities across the city of Liverpool. In 2018, David left his policing career to follow a lifetime ambition of teaching English in China. David is heavily into health and fitness and has competed in several mountain races and marathons.

Observing in Craigmount High School, Edinburgh Ivana gained experience of language teaching and learning in Scotland and in China. Ivana has played the guzheng for over seven years and has a passion for Chinese music, offering extra - curricular activities related to Chinese music and Guzheng. She then worked at a Chinese language school and an IB international school for four years. Previously Bingyu taught at a public school in the USA as a Chinese teacher and is qualified to teach Chinese from primary through to high school with her certificate in teaching IBDP. Teaching Chinese language and literature has always been Bingyu’s passion and she believes being a lifelong learner means to continuously build skills and knowledge throughout our lifetime. In 2017, Bingyu was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at Taylor Mill Elementary School. Bingyu enjoys traveling, reading and as a Table Tennis lover she was a member of the college table tennis team.

Charlene Xu is an enthusiastic and experienced teacher. She completed her BA in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at Jinan University and later went on to study an MA in Translation at the Chinese University of Hongkong. Having retained a keen interest in education, Charlene has been engaging in the field of education for six years. Previously the Dean of Academy in a media education company in Guangzhou, she then worked as an independent tutor in Chinese and English. She has taught at the Britannia International School as a Chinese teacher for the whole school and successfully helped students make great progress in Chinese. Charlene is a lifelong learner and firmly believes that being a teacher requires self-enrichment all the time. Having studied Educational Psychology and Cross-cultural Communication in the United States, she is currently a student of the Institute of Psychology, CAS in Child Development and Educational Psychology. These have laid a solid theoretical and practical foundation for her work as a teacher. Keira attended many CPD training courses provided by the IOE and Confucius Institute which assisted many IBDP students achieve Grade 7 and with 80% of her GCSE students receiving Grades 7-9 with her well-developed teaching strategies. Alan completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Printmaking at Mount Allison University and a Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University. He has worked as a custom colour printer and has taught secondary art for 25 years. He is a certified art specialist from the University of Toronto. Alan is also a professional fine artist creating photographic artwork on silver leafed canvas using traditional methods and processes he has developed himself. Alan decided to work internationally many years ago for the adventure. He has enjoyed working in Kuwait and Thailand. He appreciates teaching Art vocabulary to enhance discussion, analysis, exploring and creating. Alan enjoys keeping active with gardening, fitness activities, and yoga. Emanuele completed his BA in Humanities at the Universita’ degli Studi di Pavia (Italy) and later moved to Hong Kong to teach Italian language. After a few years, he decided to perfect his teaching skills by studying an MA in Education at the University of Bath (UK). He then returned to Hong Kong and began to teach Liberal Studies in a private school while he completed a PGDE at The University of Hong Kong. Before MIS Emanuele worked in Shanghai as a History and 21st Century Skills teacher. Emanuele spent a large part of his professional life between Hong Kong and Mainland China where he had the chance to meet inspiring colleagues and amazing children who love learning and strive to grow at personals as well as academic level. Emanuele believes that his interest in becoming an international teacher is linked to his curiousity for other people and cultures. He loves travelling with his wife and daughter and when at home, cooking for them. He is an avid chess player and an enthusiastic football player; unfortunately, he can’t admit to being excellent at either of these two activities. He is sure that his journey as a learner hasn’t ended yet.

Dale completed his BSc in History with Tourism at Bolton University before completing his PGCE at the University of Greenwich. He then read for a BTh in Theology at the University of Oxford. After a number of years working in the Prison Service in the UK, Dale and his family moved to Germany where he taught at one of the European Union’s ‘European Schools’. Following four years in Alicante, Spain, he then taught in the Juniors at a Canadian school on Jeju Island, South Korea. Dale’s wife Karen is a MIS Juniors class teacher and their son studies in Seniors. They also have a daughter, Mirjam, who is in the UK. Dale is at his happiest listening to songs from the Eurovision Song Contest of which he is a dedicated fan!

She worked for a few years in the Outdoor Education industry before deciding to do a PGCE in Secondary Geography. Jenny has previously been a Mixed Age Housemistress at Downe House School in the UK and Assistant Director of Studies at Elstree School in the UK. Jenny decided to work internationally four years ago and was been based in Kathmandu, Nepal before she joined MIS. In Kathmandu Jenny was active in supporting community projects including environmental programmes and gender equality projects. Faye earned her first Bachelor degree in European Studies and then BSc (cum laude) in International Business Administration at RSM Erasmus University and an MA in English Language and Culture at Leiden University in Holland. She further completed her MPhil in Innovation, Strategy and Organisation at JBS of Cambridge University and her third Masters degree in Teaching Chinese to other Language Speakers at Fudan University in China with full scholarship. She received her PGCE from Sunderland University. After working as a Marketing Researcher in Port of Rotterdam and as a Mandarin teacher at a school and a university in Holland, she returned to China to start teaching business studies/economics at a Chinese international school in 2009. During the past few years, she also served as a Director of a language centre, Director of Studies and Exam Officer at an international school and founded some small businesses. Faye speaks Mandarin, Wenzhounese, English, Dutch and some German. In her own time, she loves to travel, practice vocal singing and calligraphy.

As a student majoring in Japanese Language and Literature in university, she passed the N1 Japanese Proficiency Test in her second year and then studied in Japan for the rest of the two years. During her study in Japan, she attended a wide range of activities inside as well as out of school. She held the 15th annual high school student English speech contest of Hiroshima Prefecture and served as a Chinese-Japanese interpreter for Sakura Science Plan to introduce Japanese campus culture to the students from Mainland. Yawen obtained her Master of Arts (Visual Arts) from the Australia National University, Canberra and her Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Before joining MIS Yawen worked at Nord Anglia Foshan school as a secondary school Visual Arts teacher, where at the same timed she trained as an IB Visual Arts Teacher. Before working in China, she was awarded a full scholarship to study at Nanyang Technological University to gain her teaching qualification (PGDE). She worked at one of top primary schools in Singapore where she gained a lot of experience in teaching art and as a coordinator, planned exhibitions and the whole school curriculum. Thereafter, Yawen worked as a primary and secondary Visual Arts teacher at a few international schools in China. As well as teaching, she has spent time taking comic workshops in the USA and Hypnosis courses which she believes can benefit her students from a therapeutic perspective. As an electrical engineer, his experience is from engineering design at a design institute in Beijing. Leon joined MIS in 2019 as a Technology teaching assistant and is at his happiest when supporting students to complete final design product pieces. With a commitment to STEM his use of the cross-learning between science, technology, engineering and mathematics is utlised daily. Leon likes to maintain continuous learning and participates in Artificial Intelligence related training every week. He hopes that through his continuous learning, he can bring the latest design and technology to students and apply it to specific projects to meet new needs, creating more value.

John holds degrees in Music from the University of Cambridge and the University of London. He has a wealth of experience as a teacher and educational leader in some of the most academically successful schools in the UK and, more recently, in China. John is a pianist and he still enjoys performing in China, the UK and other countries, mainly in Asia. However, his passions in school are choral and chamber music. His choirs and chamber groups have won national awards in the UK and he now enjoys helping MIS instrumentalists and singers to develop their considerable talents here in China.

Shirley Zheng was raised in Shenzhen and started playing the piano at the age of seven. She began teaching piano during her undergraduate years before furthering her studies in London, graduating with an MA in Music from the renowned Goldsmiths College, University of London. Upon graduation, she joined Dulwich International High School (Zhuhai) and then graduated with a PGCEI from the University of Nottingham before completed a level one Orff music course in Melbourne. She enjoys classical music, as well as the musicals of the West End and Broadway. When not teaching or performing, her interest in travelling, as well as learning different languages keeps her busy. During her travels, she loves communicating with the locals in their native tongue as she picks up the many colourful cultures around the world.

Having previously worked in America, he began his teaching career in the UK where he worked in a range of schools for seven years as a Lead Teacher of PE, Head of Rugby and Basketball and as an SSCO before moving to Siem Reap, Cambodia where he worked as a Head of PE and Swimming. Rob strongly believes in a ‘Sport for All’ approach to PE and values the benefits that sport and physical activity can bring to students at any level. He likes to offer a range of activities so that students can engage in sport at a recreational level with a focus on enjoyment and developing lifelong healthy habits. He also likes to challenge students to help them improve their skills further with a view to taking part in competitive sport locally, nationally or internationally. He is a keen tennis player, runner and swimmer, often competing in half marathons and open water swimming events. June has extensive experience in education of child development and parent licensing. She established ABOOK, a one-stop family education growth platform based on the community to advocate giving children an appropriate ecological environment, enabling them to grow at their own pace, learn to share, sympathise, cooperate with others and be independent. June has worked in remote mountain areas in southern China and Indonesia for voluntary teaching, seeking for ways to support children's growth under limited conditions. In her daily life June enjoys cooking diverse kinds of food and going for walks on the beach.

Mia completed her Bachelor of Science degree, in Mathematics and Economics at The University of California, Los Angeles(UCLA) and later her Master of Arts in Teaching, single subject of Mathematics at University of Southern California (USC). Whilst at UCLA Mia started running a small business in catering to serve UCLA students. Mia was interviewed by UCLA’s student newspaper Daily Bruin and her business highly rated. Mia worked as a full-time public high school maths teacher in the USA and her project-based learning maths classroom was one of the most popular subjects.
In 2020 during the pandemic, Mia finished her Alternative Investment programme at Harvard Business School(HBS). Mia keeps learnings and she enjoys helping students to develop this appreciation of Mathematics explaining maths is not an isolated academic field that is limited to certain professional futures. Mia helps students realise that the expansive nature of Mathematics prepares them to use logic in pursuit of truths no matter what kind and form of truths they may set out to discover. Mai believes Mathematics is not boring nor should be feared; rather, it can serve as the very basis of any kind of meaningfully approaching a problem and solving it.

Don received his master degree in Learning Difficulties at Northwestern University, USA. Before joining MIS, he was the Head of Secondary at Yew Wah International Education School in Shanghai (Lingang). As well as management roles, Don has been teaching A Level maths continuously and is also a certified high school maths teacher through the Department of Education in China. Don coached participants in international maths competitions (AMC & Mathleague) and speech and debate competitions (NSDA) in recent years. As a coordinator, Don is experienced in teaching research methods and academic writing for EPQ and IPQ, which are highly recognised qualifications for students applying to research universities. As an educator who has years of working experience in the US and in China, Don is a strident advocate of holistic education and is keen on promoting teaching methodologies that encourage students to take ownership of their learning as well as their academic progress. In his personal life, Don is a sports lover and has finished multiple full marathons.

Eileen obtained her degree in Computer Science and Technology from the Zhengzhou University. Shortly after she went to Duisburg-Essen University in Germany to study Intelligent Network Engineering. Eileen’s working experience comes from Xueersi Online School where she worked as a course designer, designing programming courses, including Python and robot programming. Following this she was employed by Guangzhou Zhong Huang International Education Group where she taught IB MYP digital design and AP CSA and served as the head of the design group and the head of STEAM respectively. Eileen is very interested in Brain Science and Learning Science, and also tries to apply these theories into practice.

Stefan completed his master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of York, with a year in industry at GlaxoSmithKline in the final year. Throughout the course, Stefan had developed a passion for educating young people through the Scout Association which drove him to pursue a career in teaching. He trained at two schools in the North Yorkshire area before spending three years at a high school in Merseyside, UK. Stefan has run STEM clubs throughout his time working in schools, aiming to engage every student’s inner scientist and inspire them to learn more.

Later after successfully passing the oral defense after his admission by HKU, he worked in Shenzhen for two years in Bright Elite and Orange County American High School respectively, teaching chemistry and science. Peter decided to use his skills in education that associated with chemistry and biology and teaching enables him to deliver his passion of these subjects to students. Peter enjoys travelling and making new friends along the way.

After working for a few years as project manager in the mechanical industry, Carey decided to embark on a career in education. Her first post was with school in Shenzhen where as a Physics teacher she taught students in Grades 9 and 10. She enjoys teaching in bilingual classes (English/Mandarin/Cantonese) to help students from different cultures learn Physics more easily which keeps their interest high. UK-born James completed a Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics at Griffith University, Queensland, Australia. He then went on to gain his secondary school teaching qualification with a Graduate Diploma of Education in English and history, also at Griffith University. Following graduation, James taught in Australia, both on the Gold Coast and in outback Queensland. However, an interest in China and teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) saw him make the move to Shenzhen two years ago.

After accepting an internship in the Marketing and Communications department, she joined the team full time and discovered a great passion within the education sector and helping students along their journey. Having travelled to China when she was younger, she promised herself she would return and 2019, Chloe flew to Beijing to teach EAL teaching across multiple year groups. Chloe has also spent six months in a Junior school in New Zealand and loves to get to know her students and create fun and exciting lessons to inspire and challenge them. She served as industrial designer and 3D artist before deciding to teach in schools. Fuzul Meer is a teacher of economics (and business studies) and obtained his MSc in Economics from Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics. With over two decades of teaching experience he started his teaching career in Finland, in 1996, while he was a Ph.D. student at the Economics Department of the University of Helsinki. Fuzels’ outstanding performance in PGCE studies meant he was nominated by the Jyvaskyla University of Applied Sciences for a scholarship from the University of Sunderland. In Finland Fuzul Meer has gained experience working in some of the top universities such as the Swedish School of Economics & Business Administration, Helsinki University of Technology and Lahti Branch of the Helsinki University of Technology to name but a few. As well as teaching, Fuzal has worked as a researcher at the Lappeenranta University of Technology and a marketing analyst at the Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce. Fuzel is proud to have also worked in the Netherlands, the UK, Malaysia, and China.

University Counsellor
Nationality: Chinese
Zoe completed her BA in English at Xi’an Jiaotong University, during which time she was also recommended to an exchange program at Miami University in the United States. She has been working in education since 2015 and has over six years of experience in university counselling. She has enjoyed working with students from different backgrounds, guiding them through their senior years planning and university applications, and has helped them get into top universities in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Hong Kong and other destinations.
Drama Teacher (Seniors)
Nationality: British
Poppy graduated from the University of Essex with a BA in Musical Theatre before completing her Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. She has spent the last three years teaching in the Performing Arts Department at one of the UK’s leading colleges, where she specialised in Acting. Poppy has directed three season shows per academic year, including collaboration on a Theatre in Education tour, taking condensed Shakespeare plays into local schools. Poppy is passionate about engaging all students in the Arts and inspiring creative learners who are willing to jump in the deep end. Poppy seeks to ensure her classroom is a fun and friendly environment for her students so they can leave as courageous, confident and resilient young people! Poppy loves keeping fit, attending the Theatre and travelling.

Ms Davis obtained her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Montevallo in the USA. Majoring in Piano Danielle also a proficient singer and plays the violin and guitar. Danielle holds an American teacher qualification certificate and an English TEFL teacher qualification certificate. Having taught international music courses both in America and China, she has helped students pass the CAIE music exams for more than 8 years. Danielle believes her skill and experience helps prepare students for participating in local and overseas music festivals and events. Danielle enjoys improving students’ abilities to sing in the choir and play musical instruments.
Art Technician
Nationality: Chinese
Tong Fuxuan graduated from Sichuan Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Performance. Mr Tong has over 10 years experience in music studio and lighting and audio performance. Mr Tong worked in Chengdu for two years as the audio performance technical engineer of Chengdu rongchuang cultural tourism city, where he recorded and produced the performance audio programmes. In addition he worked for the Sichuan Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra, China International (Luzhou) wine industry forum and the China Good Voice audition final (Luzhou competition area).
Mr Tong enjoys music creation, playing guitar and piano in his free time.
Music Teaching assistant

Rachel started her art Journey by learning Piano and Ballet at the age of six. Around 17 years old, Rachel realised she had a great interest in classical singing and decided to study abroad.
Rachel obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri and her Masters’ degree from Cardiff University. During her time overseas, Rachel feels she has gained value experience in performing such as participating in opera shows, choir tours and holding solo recitals.
Rachel looks forward to spending time with students and sharing her experiences and passion for music.
Head of Physical Education, Director of Sport (Whole School)
Nationality: New Zealand
Todd completed his graduate diploma of teaching and learning and Bachelor of Education at Canterbury university in 2011. After completing his degree, he taught as a PE teacher and a housemaster in New Zealand for three years before moving to England where he taught PE and was also a house parent for a further five years. During his time in New Zealand and England Todd taught across a wide age range and a variety of different nationalities. Moving to China to teach in 2019 he completing two years in Beijing before moving to Shenzhen to take up his role at Merchiston.
Outside of the classroom, Todd enjoys participating in various sports ranging from traditional team games such as basketball and rugby to more adventurous outdoor pursuit such as snowboarding, skiing and hiking. Aside from sport Todd is a keen traveler which was a major reason for his move to Asia. Todd is a passionate teacher and believes that physical education is important for all students, increasing their fitness, skill level, and strength creating healthy students who are confident in their own bodies.
Swimming Coach
Nationality: Chinese
Mr Wu completed his bachelor degree in athletic training from the Beijing Sport University in 2004. He was selected for the Chinese national team and youth team in 1999 guided by the famous swimming coach Mr Zhaoge. As a former national swimming team member, he has won many national and provincial swimming competitions. Mr Wu holds the record keeper of medley swimming in Guangdong province and is a qualified swimming coach, judge and lifeguard. Mr Wu is a certified HKSTA baby swim teacher and Hongkong AASFP Professional Fitness Trainer. Many of Mr Wu’s students have become national athletes winning first place in national swimming competition and we look forward to Mr Wu joining MIS to teach extra curriculum swim sessions out with the classroom times.

Denny received his master’s degree in education at The University of Queensland, Australia. Before joining MIS, he has more than 8 years experiences in designing, implementing and overseeing schools‘ enrichment programmes. This includes school trips, Summer/ Winter camps and Co-Curriculum Activities. Denny is interested in the outdoors and adventure and is qualified in Sailing, Kayaking, Surfing/SUP. Denny is also the leader of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and became one of the seven trainers of International Camping Director Course (ICDC) in mainland China.
CCA Coordinator, Table Tennis Head Coach & Chalmers West House Parent

Sean received his MBA degree in Supply Chain at Taxes Wesleyan University, USA. Before joining MIS, he was the Head Coach at Dallas Table Tennis Club, which has two franchise clubs in the Dallas area. Other than his coaching roles, Sean led the NBA Summer Camps for Dallas Mavericks and a Study Abroad Programme. During his MBA study period Sean worked at international school office where he recruited international students. Sean received a full scholarship from his undergraduate degree to master’s degree based on his professional table tennis skills. Fifteen years training helped him to retain the National University Champions for three years while studying in Taxes Wesleyan University.
Yoga Teacher (Whole School)

Angelina received her yoga teacher certification from Yoga Alliance, Bristol, United Kingdom. For over a decade she has been teaching yoga in many prestigious international schools in Beijing. Angeline is bilingual in Chinese and English.
Angelina has been featured on numerous television programmes and newspapers. Angelina joined CCTV Children’s Channel as the main yoga instructor, CCTV Travel Channel (aired every morning nationwide), and featured in the Wake Yoga app. Angelina is the founder and developer of “Incy Wincy Kids Yoga” programme; a unique yoga curriculum designed to assist the physical and social emotional development of students.
Angelina is mother of two boys, Oliver and Tristan who study in MIS. When she is not practicing and teaching yoga, she enjoys traveling and practicing other sports including running and skiing.
Learning Support Seniors
Nationality: Indian
Meera completed her Masters in Childcare and Education at Alagpappa University with a certification as a Dyslexia Therapist from the American language therapy Association. With over 15 years’ experience in planning support for students at various international schools in India, she has enjoyed the opportunity to teach a diverse group of children including those with ADD/ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, speech impediments, non-complaint behaviour, learning disabilities and physical challenges.
Meera joins us from Hangzhou where she has worked for three years as a teacher to students of second language learners in English. These experiences have helped her to blossom into a
well-rounded and compassionate individual who takes each student’s unique goals, needs and interests into account to create effective lesson plans and activities to accommodate them.
A mother and a wife Meera, is passionate about her students as much as her family. An avid reader and traveler, she has been exploring China and its culture with a keen interest to make connections between the two ancient cultures. A firm believer in emotional intelligence being the keystone for overall development, she has been exploring alternate ways like theatre and board games to build emotional connections and develop confidence.

Dan received her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at the University of Denver, USA. Prior to joining MIS, she was a private practice therapist. She is a member of the Psi Chi Honour Society, the Association for Psychological Science (APS) and tge Association of Chinese Helping Professionals and Psychologists International (ACHPPI). During her master study period, Dan finished her internships and gained 900+ hours of working with her clients for mental health issues in a community service centre and an inpatient behavioural centre in Colorado. Dan has years of research experience working at research labs with her professors since her sophomore year in college. She has presented their research multiple times statewide and nationally in the US. Dan received 50% scholarship from her undergraduate school and 25% scholarship from her graduate school. As a therapist who has years of working experience in the US and in China, Dan honouring diversity and embracing a multicultural approach in supporting and advocating for her clients with her professional skills and strictly follow therapy ethical principles.

Wanyi received her master’s degree in Counselling at the University of Edinburgh, UK. From 2013, Wanyi started training in applied psychology and gained her bachelor’s degree with distinction for her research in developmental psychology. Wanyi interned in the department of Clinical Psychology at Shenzhen Mental Health Centre (Kangning Hospital) and then worked for ‘Save the Children’ in the area of child protection and mental health. From 2017, Wanyi trained as a counsellor in the UK and graduated with distinction for her research in family relationships. Wanyi is also a registered counsellor of the COSCA (Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland) and she worked in the local counselling centres in Edinburgh before returning to China. With experiences of working as a counsellor, Wanyi believes in the potential and power in every child and is passionate to facilitate children to build on their strengths and to achieve their goals in life.

Elvia completed her master in TESOL in the university of Liverpool, UK and is on her second master’s degree in educational leadership in the university of Manchester, UK. Before joining MIS, she worked as the Director of Language & Exchange Centre in Guangdong Country Garden School and the headmaster of senior high section in Shenzhen HuaMei Foreign Language School. She has been teaching ESL for 15 years and holds the qualifications of IB DP Language B Global Examiner, Cambridge KET/PET Oral Examiner, and NCC Foundation Programme Examiner. Elva describes herself as a progressive, pragmatic, innovative and data driven project manager who works on a sound theoretical basis and at all times with a student-centred approach.
EAL - Learning Support Centre
Nationality: Chinese
Cecilia completed her master’s of education in the University of Hong Kong. Before joining MIS she taught as an English teacher in a public school and an English institution for around three years. She enjoys conducting interesting lessons for her students that are tailored, relevant, and fit their immediate English needs. She successfully organised various extracurricular activities such as annual speech contests and English clubs. Cecilia also specialises in teaching Cambridge MSE and IELTS. She has assisted many students to pass their exams and achieve the highest grades, so as to meet the language proficiency requirements of their dream schools.
Maths - Learning Support Centre
Nationality: Chinese
Cyan completed her Master’s degree in Education at the University of Leeds, UK. She actively participates in maths education and was a maths competitions examiner in Shenzhen. During her master study, she volunteered in schools abroad, where she learned the difference in teaching philosophy from Chinese education. She feels the international curriculum, combined Chinese and foreign learning methods helps students maximise their learning effects. Before joining MIS, she worked and taught in international maths and maths competitions for over three years. Cyan is enthusiastic about teaching and familiar with the psychological characteristics of K-9 students, which improves students' maths performance and academic expression ability in a short period.

Adam hails from the UK and is an honors graduate with a first-class degree in Sport and Exercise Science from University College Worcester. He went on to study a PGCE at the University Of The West Of England, specialising in Lower Primary and Early Years. Since qualifying Adam has held numerous leadership/teaching posts in some of the most prestigious British International Schools across Asia. He joins us from Cranleigh International, Abu Dhabi where he has taught for the past seven years. After spending many years working in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Tianjin he is very excited about moving back to China. He is very much looking forward to immersing himself in the language, culture, and food as well as continuing to explore this amazing country. Beyond teaching Adam is passionate about photography, and film making. He combines this passion with his love of drones which enables him to capture the incredible world around him.

Daryl completed a BA in International Development from Saint Francis Xavier University in Canada. After working for a few years teaching overseas, he decided to pursue his passion for teaching by obtaining a Master’s degree in Education from Framingham State University. Following a long stint as an English professor at Dongguk University in South Korea, Daryl expanded his international mindedness and built upon his credentials by earning his teaching license in elementary education. Daryl has spent the last two years as a Year 4 homeroom educator at BCIS in Shenzhen. Outside of his life in the classroom, Daryl enjoys staying active with sports and fitness, spending time with friends, and travelling to experience the different food, culture and sites the world has to offer.

Michael completed his Bachelors degree in Primary Education, at the University of Roehampton, London. Being a part of a senior leadership team in his last job, he ensured support and consistency to the learning experience of students in Year 3 to Year 5. This experience has given Michael an understanding of developing a curriculum, which he has used in the creation of MIS's ICT curriculum as the IT/STEM Coordinator. Keen on health and fitness, Michael enjoys time spent learning martial arts, playing sports, hiking and bike riding, a passion which he now instills in the A Team sports students as part of the coaching team at MIS. For over a decade, before training to become a teacher, Michael worked as a professional chef. He believes that organisation and strong leadership support his position as Edinburgh Clan Head and are important skills to call upon. Passing these skills on to the children he teaches is something he believes is central to creating independent, globally-minded students.
