Recently, Mr. Michael Wang, Dean of MIS MAS (Merchiston Academy Shenzhen), shared his insights during a livestream on topics such as the ALevel curriculum, transitioning to an international pathway, and personalised learning. For families considering an international education, many of his observations are worth noting.

Many parents assume that after completing nine years of compulsory education, their child can directly enter an international curriculum. In reality, whether a student has a strong English foundation or not, the transition from a domestic system to an ALevel programme requires a fundamental shift in learning style, academic language, and curriculum logic.

MAS has designed a oneyear ALevel bridging programme specifically for this purpose. For students with uneven academic strengths, this model often allows them to maximise their potential. As Dean Michael Wang puts it, “Choosing a more suitable path is often more important than repeatedly exhausting yourself in areas where you are less strong.”

The true essence of international education lies not in the name of the curriculum, but in personalised learning.
