Design&Technology
Under the structure of Cambridge International and Pearsons we are helping our designers to develop an informed engineering-based curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. Studying DT at MIS is a fantastic, structured environment and an excellent advantage for students, with a clear pathway for educational success from age 10 to 18.
Using the process of initial assessment techniques and consistent performance-based outcomes, together we are challenging and developing with the aid of our curriculum. This gives us the flexibility to design our courses that have interested, invited, and engaged our learners.
Where appropriate we are responsible for selecting topics, subject contexts, resources, and examples to support our learners’ study. These are specific for the learners, age, cultural background and learning context as well as complying with our school policies and local legal requirements.
Our Design Technology curriculum is shaped around how we want students to learn – with a wide range of expertise in teaching and learning. Our regular assessment holds the basis for the recognition of which the combination of knowledge and skills are supporting learners with a solid foundation for further study.
Candidates who achieve grades A* to C are then well prepared to follow a wide range of courses at university and further afield in the areas of engineering and design. Cambridge IGCSEs is of course accepted and valued by leading universities and employers around the world as evidence of excellent academic achievement.
Many universities require a combination of Cambridge International AS & A Levels and Cambridge IGCSEs or equivalent to meet their entry requirements. Design and Technologyat MIS provides an opportunity for pupils to develop their creative, practical, and team-work skills.
The subject is combining lessons from other areas of the curriculum including using Math’s and Science in a practical context, whilst offering the foundation of Engineering principles at all levels of learning.
Resistant Materials, together with Graphics and Electronics is one of three specialist options, which we are developing the skills which designers use within the context of manufacturing and processing, to produce and engineer products and concepts to support our world.
The foundation of Cambridge international IGCSE allows our learners the need of sufficient practical experience so they can get a broad understanding of materials, processes, and technology, to then become competent in using product design through instinctive outcomes.
Here at MIS we are enabling students to:
• develop creative thinking in areas relevant to design and technology
•applyproblem-solving skills to practical and technological problems
• develop the communication skills central to design, realisation, and evaluation
• gain knowledge and understanding of engineering through design and technology
• develop skills in research and investigation
• design and make products, taking into consideration sustainability and the wider impact onsociety
• develop the ability to make aesthetic, economic, ethical, and technical value judgements.
Our Design and Technology classrooms have a range of sophisticated and traditional machines to allow all students to develop a wide range of skills. We provide access to the DT department for several dedicated additional hours each week for students to work independently on their projects, allowing them to develop their independent learning and thinking skills within a supervised and creative environment.
With the current climate of new surroundings and factors such as recent stoppages in academia and the logistical constraints we are of course utilising assessment of their practical experience which is including the general physical and working properties of common construction materials (plastics, woods, and metals) in relation to specific designing and making tasks.
We are on our mission to provide technological benefits and break through design provision on an international scale. Maximising the confidence and atainment levels with qualifications for our school's participation to go beyond the expectations of perceptions through learning.
In utilising our D&T department along with our Cambridge International curriculum our technologist and designers are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged – equipped for success in the modern world.
