MIS receives a lot of interest from parents of students who study in HK.   As our school grows the student body from Hong Kong grows with us.  MIS like many schools in Hong Kong follow the British National Curriculum, so the transition is seamless.   To share this with interested parents, we have selected two Seniors students who themselves are from Hong Kong and live and study here at MIS to share their experience with you.

The video showcases how independent and passionate these two students are and how they have easily integrated into the MIS community.

If you are interested in MIS, please feel free to contact us.

We also took the time to interview some parents who shared their feelings about MIS.

01

Why did you decide to transfer to the mainland to study?

Parent: Thomas Cheung

Student: Helen, Year 12

Former School: Hong Kong Taoist Association Tang Hin Memorial Secondary School

The education system in Hong Kong is that students studying results are classed in bands. Band 1 to band 3. In Hong Kong, parents usually would like to let their children enter a so called “band 1” student school and so do we.

Our child entered a “highly competitive” band 1 middle school, however, it was not expected that our child had quite a lot of stress in dealing with her studying, homework, quiz and examinations when she was just in form 1 (1st year in middle school in Hong Kong).

So, we decided to change her situation. Originally, we considered to send our child to study abroad. But we thought she was too young to study abroad alone. Eventually, we decided to send her to an international school in the mainland. So that we can not only change her studying environment, but also look after her during weekends.

Parent: He Xia

Student: Jack, Year 9

Former School: Stamford American School Hong Kong

Since 2019, Hong Kong had encountered difficulties, and street riots have affected normal school attendance. In 2020, there was another outbreak of Covid-19. I thought it would be over soon, but I found that it would be a long-term event. Fortunately MCS  a strictly managed boarding school in the UK has opened a branch school MIS in Shenzhen, which is exactly the school I want my son to enter. What's more, Shenzhen has been developing rapidly in recent years. Life is convenient and very safe.

Parent: Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

Student: Lichas, Year 7

Former School: Munsang College

Affected by the 2019 Hong Kong social unrests, we are worried about the education situation in Hong Kong, which made us decide to leave Hong Kong for a better education. In addition, the widely spreading of Covid-19 over the world caused school closure in Hong Kong often with application of online-learning instead.  As a country with well control of the epidemic, our  China Mainland’s schools is not only a place adjacent to Hong Kong, it is also capable to provide daily classes for children as usual.  While we are considering the bright development of Greater Bay Area, transferring to the mainland for study comes to a best choice of my son with no hesitation.

Parent: Ms Ivy

Student: Rachel, Year 10 & Coey, Year 6

Former School: Mount St Mary College

My elder daughter studied in the UK in 2019. Due to COVID-19 , we didn't want her to go back to the UK. We tried to find a suitable school in the Mainland. Fortunately, my friend recommend MIS to us as MIS is British college in Shenzhen.

02

Whilst selecting schools, which aspect do you value most?

Parent: Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

Student: Lichas, Year 7

Former School: Munsang College

Apart from the concerns of the school environment, teachers, school spirit, equipment, school-community activities, we are very focusing on the character education, like honesty, kindness, mercy, courage, liberty, justice, equality and respect, which are all the critical elements for the development the teenagers.  Character education is useful for inspirations of wisdom and the cultivation of positive attitude individually, it is also the future and hope of a country.   MIS has been educating these excellently.

Parent: Thomas Cheung

Student: Helen, Year 12

Former School: Hong Kong Taoist Association Tang Hin Memorial Secondary School

During the selection of international schools, our highest priority is to find a school where our child can receive good quality teaching by native English-speaking teachers. The second priority is to understand the culture and the professionalism in the school management team.

03

What are your views on the MIS British Boarding system?

Parent: Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

Student: Lichas, Year 7

Former School: Munsang College

In the MIS British Boarding system, whether in class, events and living lives are all English environments, it is the best training in English.  Despite of it, there are many Chinese classmates in MIS who often provide my son an extension usage of Putonghua.   Let the children grow up in such an environment, to train them the communication skills in full English and Putonghua, making them fluent and effective in both.

Through a closely interaction with different nations students in the dormitory, also with the good taking care by the house parents, my son has more opportunity to experience the group life and learning of social skills.  MIS has assigned two other students to the same dormitory room with my son, let them to learn from each other and to build up friendship.   The comprehensive support from MIS’s teachers and staffs, especially the weekly early-morning jogging and the additional outdoor activities for the weekend boarders are much appreciated.

Parent: He Xia

Student: Jack, Year 9

Former School: Stamford American School Hong Kong

Compared with an American family boarding school, the management of British boarding school is strict, which is conducive to the cultivation of children's independent living ability, independent thinking ability, interpersonal communication ability and self-management ability.

Parent: Ms Sammi

Student: Kayden, Year 5 & Sophie, Year 3

Former School: Yuen Long Government Primary School

I hope that children can adapt to community life. The most important thing is to stay away from mobile phones and develop the habit of reading more.

04

As a student who might study in the mainland will their exam results be recognised by Hong Kong School or schools overseas?

Parent: He Xia

Student: Jack, Year 9

Former School: Stamford American School Hong Kong

I'm not sure about Hong Kong schools, but MIS is a British school, I believe the exam results are recognised worldwide.

Parent: Thomas Cheung

Student: Helen, Year 12

Former School: Hong Kong Taoist Association Tang Hin Memorial Secondary School

To us it is not so important whether our child’s results are recognised by Hong Kong schools, because our plan is to let our child to complete the A Levels in MIS and find a suitable University in other countries. The UK is our first choice.

05

Do you feel that MIS’s curriculum is similar to that of schools in Hong Kong?

Parent: He Xia

Student: Jack, Year 9

Former School: Stamford American School Hong Kong

It has a higher English standard compared with most international schools in Hong Kong.

Parent: Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

Student: Lichas, Year 7

Former School: Munsang College

My son is studying in Year 7 in MIS which is equal to Form 1 in Hong Kong.  My son joined the MIS in Jan 2021 after he finished his first term of Form 1 study in Hong Kong.  The subjects in MIS he is studying currently he found a bit different, like the science subjects in Hong Kong is ‘Integrated Science’ and the curriculum under MIS separates it into Physic, Chemistry, and Biology.   The academic levels of other subjects are a bit more difficult than Hong Kong’s ones as well.  Students expect the subjects to get harder and can catch up.  Despite of it, in general speaking, the MIS’s curriculum is similar to that of schools in Hong Kong, including the Chinese and English languages, Mathematics, History, D&T ,Music, Physical Education…….. It would be highlighted that the CCA (afterschool activates) provided by MIS is much more fruitful and interesting than Hong Kong schools’, which is most appreciated.

Thomas Cheung

He Xia

Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

Ms Ivy

Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

Thomas Cheung

Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

He Xia

Ms Sammi

He Xia

Thomas Cheung

He Xia

Jack, Year 9

Winnie Leung / Felix Chau

Lichas, Year 7
