SUMMER.TIME.

MIS Summer Camp 2021 started on Monday 12 July.  This is MIS’s third year holding a truly authentic British Boarding Summer Camp.  As we come to the end of another successful summer camp, we can already reflect on how amazing our campers have been this year.  In such a short time our Summer Camp Students have formed firm friendships that hopefully will continue to blossom and made incredible progress in English language and of course boarding!

With an array of activities, English Enrichment comes in many forms of fun learning.

Cooking Class

Mr Marco our Italian Chef spent some time teaching the students how to make authentic Italian Pizza (they certainly enjoyed eating their pizzas afterwards). Later their skilled were tested further as made decadent chocolate cake. We hope the chefs are able to recreate these delicious dishes at home for parents to sample.

British Summer Fun

Summertime means BBQs and Water Play in the UK. A British Summer Camp wouldn’t be the same without these. The students were treated to a huge splash party and BBQ at the weekend as a reward for their hard work.

Bouldering

MIS is lucky to have not only an amazing on campus bouldering wall, but an incredibly talented teacher Ms Kirsty who is an experienced boulderer and rock climber. Students were taught under the watchful eye of Ms Kirsty on how to navigate the wall and learn the safest way how to climb and descend on our walls.

Project Based Learning 1: Future City

Throughout the first week, the children in Class 1 designed and made a future city using recycled materials. They worked collaboratively and learnt lots of new vocabulary in a practical context.

At the same time, Class 2 embarked on their first project creating a future city. They have a project board and project books showing their planning. Set into teams they created a vision of want and need for the city, designed buildings and created their very own models. Alongside this, the students played word games to earn points for their teams by using the key English words linked to their project and completing a diary each day where they reflect on their project work. We have been impressed with how thoughtful Class 2 have been in their planning, and how reflective the students have been about their project work each day.

Project Based Learning 2: Air Propelled Cars

On the second week, Class 1 has had a fantastic week learning about cars and what makes them go fast! All the children designed and made their own balloon-powered cars! This was no easy job- we encountered many problems along the way and the children had to use their problem-solving skills to figure out what the problem was and how to fix it. The children also developed their resilience and determination skills and were also working together collaboratively to help each other make their cars work and go faster. We also learnt about reducing, reusing and recycling our rubbish; the children were keen to share their ideas and to learn about how our behaviour affects the planet and the environment, not only around us but all around the world.

Class 2 were more enthusiastic working on the second project this week building air propelled cars while learning about resistance, energy, and proportions. Then they got to race the cars to learn more about time and measurement. All the while writing increasingly creative project diaries and continuing to add to their project booklets. The class has improved their team working skills even more this week too, with each of them remembering to play their part. Magnificent work Class 2!

 Teamwork

It is great to see the students participate in sports and trying so hard. Teamwork is something that MIS feels strongly about encouraging in our youngster. Sport keeps us healthy not just physically, but helps us focus and sleep well. Teamwork builds strength, self-confidence and self-esteem.

During these 2 weeks, our campers got to know more about sports skills and improved their athletic ability in PE classes. We even designed a fun competition ‘team challenge’ for children on the second week to show their teamwork and build valuable friendships, which also made them feel more engaged in the camp. For example, they played curling, a team sports that tests collaboration and strategy. To win the game, the players not only need to use correct sweeping skills, but also must discuss and formulate proper strategies. Between cheers and cheers, the little campers experienced the perfect combination of personal excellence and great teamwork.

Dining

Our dedicated catering team here at MIS are happy to serve our campers. With lots of choice and different selections each day, the students couldn’t wait to go eat in the Dining Hall with our teachers.

Boarding

One of the greatest joys, but the biggest challenges for the campers is boarding. For a lot of the children, this is their first time away from home and 12 days seems so long. Friendships quickly grew and there was lots of laughter in the rooms. The  campers have enjoyed movie nights, phone nights, thinking games and an evening of free time, they also had so much fun with the dance competition. Everyone laughed and gave it their best try. The campers have a really fun on schedule and sleep is important so ensure everyone is in bed by 8.30.

What an experience. At the start of the Summer Camp, everyone looked a little nervous, there were tears and there were a number of sleepless nights, but everyone quickly settled down and enjoyed the challenge of boarding life. We believe every child has grown a little independently and in confidence, we are certain the campers will go home and tell their parents lots of exciting stories.

Mr Andrew

Houseparent (Pringle)

“Everyone is showing strength and character as we near the end of this fantastic experience, we hope they come home with lots of fun stories to tell you.”

 Value

Like MIS daily teaching, summer camp shares the MIS values. These values guide our decisions, activities, actions, and expectations of both campers and staff alike. Each one is connected and related to each other in an intricate web that ultimately creates “camp.” They are not ideas we merely post on a wall to inspire; they are concepts we live by every day in both speech and action.

Campers star for Summer Camp values:

Rihanna - for always being positive and listening to adults

Carrie - for being kind to others and staying positive

Throughout the first week, the children in Class 1 designed and made a future city using recycled materials. They worked collaboratively and learnt lots of new vocabulary in a practical context.

Project Based Learning 2: Air Propelled Cars

T

 Teamwork

Andrew

(Pringle)

V

 Value

Rihanna——她总是开朗向上,仔细聆听老师的教诲;

Carrie——她友善待人,坚持积极乐观的好心态;

Emily ——她总是面带微笑,坚持做好每件事;

Whitney——她热衷学习独立自理,认真对待每件事;
