Educational Background: Bachelor of Teaching and Learning, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Michael is a New Zealand-born teacher who completed his primary and secondary education in England, giving him a strong understanding of the British education system while developing an international perspective on education. His experiences across different countries and cultures have shaped his educational philosophy, founded on the belief that pupils thrive in classrooms built around collaboration, curiosity and high expectations.

Michael began his teaching journey at an English language learning centre in Hangzhou, China, where he worked for two years before returning to New Zealand to complete a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning at the University of Canterbury. After graduating, Michael joined West Melton School in Canterbury, New Zealand, where he spent three years developing his classroom practice, curriculum expertise and commitment to creating engaging, inclusive learning environments before returning to international education. He also holds Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Since joining Merchiston International School, Michael has taught Year 6, where he has created a positive and engaging learning environment that encourages pupils to think critically, collaborate effectively and grow in confidence. Alongside his teaching, he has contributed to the development of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and completed the IPC Level 1 professional learning programme, demonstrating his commitment to refining his practice and providing engaging, meaningful learning experiences.

Michael is passionate about helping pupils build strong academic foundations while developing the confidence, resilience and character needed to become lifelong learners.

Outside the classroom, Michael and his wife, Ruth, are both proud members of the Merchiston teaching community. Together with their young daughter, they enjoy travelling, discovering new cultures and exploring new places. Michaelenjoys basketball and football and values the important role sport plays in developing teamwork, resilience and confidence, both on and beyond the field.
