Preface

We live in a multi-dimensional era that is high-speed, digital and fragmented, with changes taking place every second of the day.

In the process of communicating with parents, we feel that parents are aware of the significance of the education model as the world is changing rapidly and the advanced modern western education philosophy and education with Chinese Characteristics are increasingly integrated.

Among many education models available, 'Whole-Person Education' is becoming an increasingly popular option for both parents and children. It’s acknowledged that a child's education determines and influences the child's life. The issue of a child's education is the responsibility of parents and the pursuit of a better future for their children. Parents want an education that will enable their children to adapt to the changing world of the future and at the same time enable them to cope with the changes with flexibility.

MIS is just such a British boarding school which adheres to the core concept of "Whole-Person Education" and brings this concept into full play. On 19 November, MIS came to Zhuhai, a southern city in China, bringing a wonderful British Whole-Person Education sharing session to all the families. Along with MIS teachers and students, the present families are curious and eager to familiarize themselves more with this international school, aiming for the keys to their children’s future.

For this event, we are delighted to invite Tiffany and Lucas, an adorable boy-girl twin from MIS, to share on stage as juniors’ representatives. Cici, the mother of this pigeon pair from Zhuhai, entrusted her children to MIS for their education.

The reason why I am sharing Cici's story is that her story mirrors the stories of many parents who have grown up with their children, giving us confidence and encouragement.

Cici used to be an anxious mum for many reasons, one of which was that she wanted to be a perfect mother. Inspired by the teachers in MIS, her children witnessed significant progress and therefore, Cici has now become more relaxed and more understanding of their children. She has now started to consider how to make her children grow better in a purely British education system setting, coupled with family education.

"The best thing that parents can do for their children is to allow them to explore the world and develop a sense of resilience and participation," Cici mentioned to MIS staff earlier.

Mom’s Decision to

Change School in Year 5

Tiffany and Lucas had been attending a bilingual school since the first year of juniors, where they had learned to be independent and to excel, and the school was no longer sufficient for their development.

Cici knew that the education and results the children received at their previous bilingual school were not enough to prepare them for a complex and uncertain future and that this was not an option in the long run. At the same time, Year 1 was an essential starting point in their lives and she was afraid that the children would not receive a good education and that their talents as well as potential would be depleted in the long run.

By coincidence, Cici was recommended by a friend concerning MIS. She was struck by the school motto “Ready Ay Ready” and the fact that such a holistic approach to education is perfect for the development of children. In reality, British education focuses on developing students' thinking, life skills, creativity, social responsibility and the ability to think and solve problems independently.

Everything fell into place. Cici didn't hesitate and made up her mind to let their children join the MIS. Her children, Tiffany and Lucas, are now Year 6 students in MIS. They are boarding students and lead happy and meaningful life daily.

Cici is still impressed by the professionalism from the admissions test to the formal admissions process of MIS and is convinced that she made the right choice.

Mom's Worries and Surprises

Although the children had adapted to boarding life from an early age, Cici was initially concerned about whether the children would adapt to the purely British immersion environment in MIS. She wanted her children to enjoy a purely foreign education system that would foster a grand international outlook and independent thinking, but she was also worried that their children would not learn Chinese well and thus lose their understanding of China's traditional culture. All these worries have been answered, and can even be called surprises after the children have enrolled in school.

The children have

become more confident

Tiffany and Lucas have settled in well at MIS and are extremely self-driven, showing changes that have shocked their mothers in just over two months, with huge leaps in their English language abilities.

"The children have somehow become 'native', and they are more motivated to learn and their English have improved to a level where they can communicate daily," Cici added.

Tiffany, Cici’s daughter, mentioned at the Zhuhai Event that she has improved in all aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English, and is now brave enough to speak in public in English.

Both children have been actively involved in the British Debate programme and other activities within the school, with the help of their teachers and classmates, and their leadership skills and confidence have been greatly enhanced.

MIS provides an excellent educational programme. Unlike some other schools, we offer a wide range of opportunities for our students to have different experiences each day, both inside and outside the classroom. At the primary level, we combine the Primary Curriculum from our home school, MCS (Edinburgh, UK), the English National Curriculum and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to form a curriculum that is unique to our school, with the IPC being unique in that each unit incorporates a different curriculum and teaching type activity. These activities help students to develop global awareness and enhance their knowledge of themselves, their communities and the world in which they live.

In addition to the distinctive academic programmes, the school also offers a wide range of extra-curricular enrichment programmes, led by the philosophy of "Integrating the East and the West and Educating the Whole Person", with three quality programmes - Academic Enhancement, Science and Creativity, and Sports - to support children's personal development comprehensively and professionally. Each course is designed to open a brand-new world for students to discover themselves and explore the world intensively and extensively.

At the same time, MIS is committed to nurturing a gentleman and a lady of "virtue, wisdom, manners and learning" as the starting point for education. Courteousness, humility, honesty and perseverance are all keywords that are integrated into the daily education in MIS.

Boarding Education is

much more than just

living at school

Tiffany and Lucas' rapid progress is also due to the MIS boarding education model. As MIS junior students, Tiffany and Lucas live in Pringle House, where Andrew & Jo Pounds are their house parents and meet every morning on the ground floor of Pringle House to take roll calls, hold meetings and read the values of 'kindness, friendship and helpfulness. During the days when they were unable to return home due to Covid-19, the two children were well cared for by Andrew & Jo Pounds and were encouraged to participate in sports and activities, adapting quickly and settling into the MIS family.

Unlike traditional school accommodation, boarding at MIS is not the last resort, but an essential part of a whole person's education. MIS wants to create a 'second home' for children away from home.

Contrary to some parents' beliefs that their children will be left unsupervised, will not adapt to boarding life, will not be close to their parents and will be affected by the critical period of their education, a mature and personalized boarding education provides children with a sense of belonging in a warm, safe and productive environment, developing self-reliance and self-confidence, and receiving care and support in all aspects of their lives, from academics to daily life.

MIS brings nearly two centuries of boarding history and culture to Shenzhen, China and the boarding team strives to create a warm, safe community that extends the whole child experience throughout the day and night. In MIS families, children are away from their parents but have the undivided attention of the warden and house parents and boarding tutors, as well as the care of younger students from the senior classes. Students live and study together, participate in boarding and clan activities, gain confidence, self-reliance and communication skills, and obtain lifelong friendships with fellow students. Parents are constantly informed by the teachers on their children's physical, and mental development and other needs, which helps to bring them closer to each other.

In addition to the care and attention, boarding students at MIS have more opportunities for academic support than day students: the school teachers provide personalized support for children, such as English for young boarders, or help prepare older boarders for further education, saving parents the effort of tutoring their children after work.

A Balance between East

and West,

ChildrenDevelopInternational

Perspectives and Personal

Integrity in a Multi-Cultural

Environment

In addition to the use of full English language teaching, MIS places emphasis on the importance of students' awareness of and fluency in their local culture and actively upholds the values of Chinese traditional culture. As part of the core curriculum, all students from Years 1 to 9 are required to study Chinese.

Slide left to see more

Chinese culture is vast and profound, and the teaching of Chinese in MIS is not just about language. It is about planting the seeds of Chinese culture in the hearts of the students and gradually developing a sense of belonging and cultural confidence in Chinese culture and the Chinese language. The teacher acts as a leader, leading the students to quote scriptures and compare them to themselves, provoking them to think about life, helping them to build a healthy and positive ideology and correct values, expanding the thickness and emotional depth of their lives and building a sound personality.

In addition, the multi-national and multi-cultural campus environment provides students with a natural multi-cultural atmosphere in which they can gain an international perspective and knowledge through cross-cultural communication, become familiar with international rules and regulations, gain a deeper understanding of world cultures, and enhance their ability to engage in dialogues around the world.
