Karuna Rescue is a privately run shelter that relies entirely on the goodness of those in the Shenzhen community. Sachin and Jenny, who run and own the shelter, created it for the purpose of helping animals in need. They have successfully rescued and rehomed numerous dogs and cats locally as well as internationally. Currently, the shelter homes 47 dogs that need to be fed, nursed back to health, and found new forever homes. They struggle to do this task alone and this is where the Outreach Team decided to step in and take some of the pressure off.

With the above in mind, our Outreach team and students have made a huge impact through our animal food drive! It was quite an overwhelming experience to see how much our students and staff embraced the value of Unity and came together to bring in as much food as possible for their clans and most importantly Karuna Rescue.

Our Seniors Outreach team had the opportunity to visit the shelter and handover 517kgs of food (that’s over half a ton!), and what a journey it was. On Tuesday, 17 October we loaded up the bus with all the food and started our trip to the shelter.We exited the bus and were greeted with a cacophony of happy, excited dogs enjoying play time. It was an incredible sight to see these beautiful animals wanting nothing more than to say hello and receive some love. We were also greeted by the resident cats who warmed to several of our students right away.

Alas, all those bags of food weren’t going to unload themselves and it was time for our students to get hands on. We piled it all in the storage area and needed to take a break after all the effort. While they were taking a moment, they got the opportunity to hear about a day in the life of Joe, who is the full-time shelter manager. It is in these moments that one is able to understand the full extent of their contributions as the reality of running a shelter sinks in.

This time round, our students were not able to interact with the animals as they were all out for their daily play time. However, after the success of this visit, we are hoping to volunteer at the shelter once a month so that students get the opportunity to try on Joe’s giant shoes and get stuck in.

这一次，由于所有的动物都在进行日常玩耍，我们的学生无法与它们互动。然而，考虑到此次访问的成功，我们希望每个月都能在庇护所做义工，以便学生们有机会参与其中。
