Recently, Merchiston International School Shenzhen (MIS) organised a unique ‘Golf + Intangible Cultural Heritage’ study tour for KS3 students. This trip not only carries on the golf tradition of our Scottish alma mater, Merchiston Castle School (MCS), but also integrates Chinese intangible cultural heritage, helping students to expand their international horizons and understand traditional craftsmanship through cross-cultural immersion experiences.
Golf:
Exploring the Culture
& Hands-on Practice
At the G Planet Golf Centre, students were given an in-depth understanding of the evolution of golf from an aristocratic sport to a national sport. The coach particularly emphasized the embedded etiquette culture of golf - where every principle, from respecting opponents to exercising self-discipline, epitomizes the essence of gentlemanly spirit.
Afterwards, Andrew Dawes, the top American golf coach, delivered hands-on instruction to the students. Demonstrating essential techniques for both long and short clubs—from grip posture to swing dynamics—he provided personalized adjustments for each student's form.
During practice drills, our KS3 students are gradually mastering the rhythm of their strokes. The climax came with an entertaining team competition, where collaborative spirit and athletic passion intertwined, allowing students to discover the wisdom and charm of sports through their exhilarating efforts.
Non-Heritage Workshop:
A Youthful Dialogue on Traditional Skills
In the second stop of Guanlan Lake Craft Workshop, the non-heritage experience was carried out in the form of ‘static and dynamic’:
01
The art of paper-cutting: Under the guidance of the non-heritage artists, students folded and cut red rice paper to create a window decoration that signifies ‘good fortune and longevity’. Behind the seemingly simple lines is a precise balance of strength and beauty.

Movable Type Printing: Amid the lingering fragrance of ink, students transformed into "ancient artisans," personally completing the printing of a Tang poem—from selecting type molds and proofing layouts to inking and pressing. The moment the raised lead type met the rice paper, a millennium of civilization sprang to life on the page.

Culture Remixed:
When Tradition Meets the Next Generation
This study is not only a skill learning, but also a cultural dialogue. The self-discipline in golf and the craftsmanship in non-heritage skills seem to be very different, but they reached a tacit understanding in the spiritual core of ‘pursuing excellence’. A student exclaimed, ‘Concentration in swinging a golf club and patience in paper-cutting both require total dedication - it turns out that Chinese and Western cultures can be so connected!’
This innovative attempt of MIS has shattered the conventional single-dimension approach to study programs. Through its innovative "sports + culture" crossover model, students simultaneously develop character through international athletics while gaining cultural confidence from traditional craftsmanship. MIS plans to design more such interdisciplinary programs, nurturing youths to become a new generation of talent that remains rooted in heritage while embracing global perspectives.
