Scottish Culture and Heritage

St Andrew’s Day Celebration

“A Taste of Scotland”

Everyone will know that MIS is the first overseas campus of MCS which is located in the beautiful Scottish capital city of Edinburgh.

MIS celebrated St Andrew’s Day this afternoon. “A Taste of Scotland” is our annual event that recognises our Scottish culture and heritage. Hosted by Dr Tod and Ms Sonia who hail from Scotland, the event is a wonderful way for our MIS Community to enjoy a “wee bit of Scotland” whilst here in Shenzhen.

St Andrew's Day

St Andrew’s Day, celebrated on 30 November each year, is considered a national holiday in Scotland and across Europe. St Andrew, an apostle of Jesus, is the patron saint of Scotland. Thus, Scots have celebrated St Andrew for over a thousand years, with feasts being held in his honour as far back as the year 1000 AD.

St Andrew's Day carries the passionate Scots' desire for gathering, joy and company. As a celebration of the Scottish nation, Scots from all over the world and friends who love Scottish culture will gather and celebrate on this day.

Parents, guests and staff were treated to Scottish foods, poems and traditional country dancing which is called a Ceilidh. For some it was the first time to experinece our Scottish culinary delights and try our traditional dancing.

Scottish Traditional Foods

Haggis, Cock-a-Leekie Soup, Shortbread & Tablet

These Scottish delicacies are eaten and enjoyed in many homes in Scotland and the UK. Cock-a-Leekie Soup and Haggis date back to 1430s with Shortbread dating back to the 12th Century and was popularly credited to Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th Century.

Poetry & Music

Quoting the famous Robbie Burns, Scottish born Dr Tod and Ms Sonia recited the authors words to experience the poem. Our Seniors Students performed Deacon Blue’s world famous hits with Michael performing Chopin’s Scottish influenced piece “Fantasie-Impromtu”.

My Heart’s in the Highlands & To a Mouse

Written by famous Scottish Poet Mr Robert Burns in 1789 & 1785 respectively

My Heart's In The Highlands

By Robert Burns - 1789

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;

Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth ;

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

Farewell to the mountains, high-cover'd with snow,

Farewell to the straths and green vallies below;

Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,

Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;

Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

To a Mouse

Robert Burns – 1785

Wee, sleekit, cow’rin, tim’rous beastie,
O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi’ bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an’ chase thee,
Wi’ murd’ring pattle!

I’m truly sorry man’s dominion,
Has broken nature’s social union,
An’ justifies that ill opinion,
Which makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An’ fellow-mortal!

Deacon Blue

Real Gone Kid & Dignity

Deacon Blue are a Scottish Pop Rock band formed in Glasgow in 1985. The song “Real Gone Kid” will be remembered by many British people growing up in this era. "Dignity" was Deacon Blue’s first official release. It is one of their most popular songs and it is usually played as the final song at concerts. It was also sung at the closing ceremony at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

Chopin in Dunblane 1848

Fantasie-Impromptu

The Polish born composer spent the second half of his short life in Paris where aristocratic students sought him out as a piano tutor. They came from far afield and these clients included a Miss Jane Stirling of Dunblane, Scotland. Keen that Chopin should experience the romantic landscape of her native country, she insisted that Chopin join her family at their castle, just outside the Scottish Cathedral town. He composed this much-loved piece while he was in the UK with the Stirling family.

Scottish Country Dancing

Ceilidh

These popular community dances are traditionally danced at weddings and Ceilidhs. Dating back to the 17th Century they are set to musical forms (Jigs, Reels & Strathspey Reels) which come from the Gaelic tradition of  Highland Scotland as do the steps used in performing the dances, traditionally a figure corresponds to an eight-bar phrase of music.

Scottish Gifts

Guest were able to browse the Outreach stall which had many traditional Scottish gifts for sale.  All proceeds go to our school charity Outreach, which helps local charities throughout the Guangdong province and China.

Auld Lang Syne

At the end of the ceremony, in true Scottish tradition everyone gathered in a circle and sang Auld Lang Syne.

Auld Lang Syne

A popular Scottish song traditionally sung to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Also often played and sang at funerals, graduations and celebratory functions.

勇士们的家园,我骄傲的故乡;

破坏了自然界的和衷共济;
