The osmanthus flowers exude their fragrance, the moon shines bright, the breeze is still, and the world is illuminated......In the blink of an eye, the Mid-Autumn Festival has arrived once more. Today, the students of Merchiston International School(MIS)carry jade rabbit lanterns and wear fragrant osmanthus sachets, celebrating the joyous occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of China’s four major traditional festivals, also known as the "Mid-Fall Festival" or "Moon Chasing Festival." The origins of the Mid-Autumn Festival can be traced back to ancient China's "moon worship," where primitive people observed the seasons and celebrated the moon during the mid-autumn month, offering prayers for good fortune during the cold dew period.

On September 12th, in celebration of this traditional festival, the Chinese department organized a plethora of vibrant activities for teachers and students.

During the poetry competition, students showcased their cultural heritage and poetic talents. Chinese culture boasts countless poems related to the moon. Not only did the students at MIS experience the charm of traditional Chinese poetry, but they also felt the unique essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival through the poetic dialogue with the moon.

Chinese idioms are profound and filled with fun. The students of MIS transformed into the most expressive performers, bringing various idioms to life through acting, playing a game of charades. With expressions ranging from raised eyebrows to laughter, from astonishment to vigorous movements, they brought static idioms to life, enjoying the happiness of the Mid-Autumn Festival through vivid performances.

Mooncakes are a traditional delicacy of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Under the guidance of their teachers, the students of MIS made mooncakes, from preparing the ingredients, kneading the dough, forming the shapes, adding the fillings, to shaping them. Beautiful little mooncakes emerged, and the children’s faces lit up with joy. Looking at the mooncakes they had made by hand, they felt a sense of accomplishment, akin to creating precious works of art. It is certain that when they enjoy these self-made mooncakes while admiring the moon, it will add another layer of flavor to their experience.

MIS looks towards the global horizon while being deeply rooted in Chinese culture. In the dissemination of traditional Chinese culture, we continue the legacy, carrying forward the good, turning the eternal moon in our hearts into a shared cultural understanding, and coming together for the Mid-Autumn Festival at MIS.
